Job overview

We are looking to appoint a full time Locum Consultant Obstetrician to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at the Jessop Wing of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. This post is fixed term for 12 months. 

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

 

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a Comprehensive Obstetrics Service. The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.  They will contribute to the work of the maternity team by participating in a wide range of activities depending on their specialist interests. This would include: antenatal clinics and clinics with women diagnosed with gestational diabetes; working on labour ward; a variety of opportunities in specialist antenatal clinics (e.g. maternal medicine) managing high-risk inpatients, contributing to various MDT meetings and liaising with obstetric colleagues in surrounding units as part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Local Maternity and Neonatal system.

The successful candidate will participate in out of hours resident and non-resident cover in the Jessop Wing. Resident nights are undertaken in pairs every 10 weeks with two days off afterwards. Non-resident on call is approximately 1 in 15.

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise.
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD or equivalent
  • ATSM/SITM in maternal medicine or equivalent.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty. If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate.
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Teaching and training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels.
  • Evidence of training non-medical members of staff (e.g. Midwifery).

Personal attributes

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values (see appendix)
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC’ good medical practice (2013).

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Clinical Governance and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience in performing clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project

Management and Administration

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management, particularly with regards to maternity services.

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of appropriate broad-based competence and experience in Obstetrics.
  • Evidence of competence in contemporary management strategies in Obstetrics.
  • Willingness to acquire/improve clinical skills & knowledge in Obstetrics.
  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in general Obstetrics.
  • Ability to prioritise clinical problems in a complex environment.
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage complex specialist patients in a tertiary centre.
Desirable criteria
  • ATSM Advanced Labour Ward Practice.
  • ATSM/SITM in Maternal Medicine
  • Experience of working with vulnerable women during pregnancy.
  • Experience of working on the triage and management of women presenting for unscheduled care in pregnancy.
  • Fetal Medicine or other qualifications in area of specialist interest.
