Job overview
We are looking for an exceptional, creative and dynamic pharmacy leader with a proven track record of service delivery and innovation.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, organisation, evaluation and delivery of dispensary and medicines management services across all sites at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and St Luke's Hospice. You will be supported by a high-quality team of pharmacy technician managers within medicines management and dispensary services for whom you will have direct line management responsibilities.
You will contribute to the strategic and operational planning of pharmacy services locally, regionally and nationally. The successful candidate will help ensure that the STH pharmacy technician/assistant workforce is at the forefront of workforce development initiatives.
You will be line managed by the chief technician and will work closely with the two deputy chief pharmacists, deputy clinical services and operational managers as well as principal pharmacists.
To be eligible for this post you must be a registered pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council with significant post qualification experience in hospital pharmacy, demonstrated by acting in a senior role responsible for managing staff, services and resources.
Main duties of the job
Manage dispensary and medicines management teams.
Delivery and maintenance of a high level of medicines management to all wards and departments of the Trust.
Ensure optimal deployment of workforce, both skills and numbers to deliver a safe, cost-effective pharmacy service.
Lead on service development projects within medicines management and dispensary services.
Responsible for the formulation and write up of policies and procedures.
Contribute to the development and delivery of the workforce plan for the dispensary and medicines management services.
Engage with national and regional professional networks to ensure that best practice is shared, implemented and benchmarked as appropriate.
Ensure that the performance of all pharmacy technicians and assistants in the dispensary and medicines management teams are consistently supported by managers within their team, who themselves are both well trained and supported.
Outstanding leadership skills will be essential; you must also have in-depth operational knowledge of hospital pharmacy services.
The ability to work flexibly under time constraints/deadlines and the ability to lead and motivate others are essential for this post. You must be self-motivated, resilient and have excellent communication, people management, organisational and time management skills.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Approved or recognised course/qualification meeting the requirements for registration with General Pharmaceutical Council.
- Postgraduate management qualification or equivalent relevant experience to master’s level demonstrated by acting in a senior role responsible for managing staff, services or resources.
- Evidence of relevant professional learning and development, to postgraduate/master’s level.
- Accredited Checking Technician Status or equivalent qualification.
- Registered pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
Desirable criteria
- Formal project management and/or quality improvement qualification.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in hospital pharmacy at a senior level, managing complex services across multiple teams.
- Extensive experience of leading technical services in a relevant setting including leadership and management of staff
- Highly developed broad based operational/management knowledge acquired from experience and/or post graduate study.
- Experience of working with a wide range of other professionals in integrated teams.
- Significant experience of working with and applying Human Resource procedures, including managing attendance, recruitment, disciplinary policies and supporting staff wellbeing.
- Experience of training/teaching pharmacy staff.
- Experience of developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) audit, and service review.
- Leading projects across departmental boundaries.
- Experience of setting and monitoring standards for delivery of pharmacy services.
Desirable criteria
- Proven track record of delivering and implementing change to education and training programmes.
- Experience of Budget Management.
Skills and Knowledge

- Knowledge of key NHS policy and implications on pharmacy services.
- Knowledge of pharmacy technician professional practice at national, regional and local levels.
- Have excellent communication skills; non-verbal, verbal and written in order to communicate with a broad spectrum of people (from senior directorate managers to members of the public). demonstrable from previous experience.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate to a wide range of stakeholders and present evidence of service delivery information.
- Ability to analyse and interpret information when undertaking investigations of incidents, complaints and HR investigations, demonstrable from previous experience.
- Proven ability to develop skill mix in pharmacy services.
- Ability to deal constructively with conflict, verbal aggression and formal complaints, demonstrable from previous experience.
Desirable criteria
- Ability to be proactive in networking and benchmarking with colleagues across all healthcare organisations, demonstrable from previous experience.
Personal Qualities

- Empathetic and sensitive to customer needs (patients and staff) demonstrable from previous experience.
- High degree of self-motivation and able to motivate others.
- Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to form positive relationships at all levels
