Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate Practitioner Apprenticeship

The post holder will:
Work under the supervision and guidance of qualified staff for the duration of their apprenticeship.
Complete the CSR Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate qualification which includes the following elements:
- Healthcare Science Associate Level 4 Standard covering the knowledge, skills and behaviours.
- Pearson/Edexcel BTEC L4 Diploma in Healthcare Science
- Functional Skills (If required)
Have 1 day per week protected study time. The other 4 days a week will be used to gain skills and experience of working as a medical physics associate technologist in Radiology Physics.
Assist in the provision of radiation protection services to the users of x-ray systems, sealed and unsealed radioactive sources, and non-ionising radiation. This includes assisting in performing quality assurance tests on x-ray imaging equipment, performance of periodic testing of radiation monitoring equipment and assisting with the Radiology Physics dosimetry service and administration.

To provide technical support to scientific staff in the provision of a high-quality radiation protection service to users of x-ray units, radioactive materials and non-ionising radiations, extending over a comprehensive range of services, in both hospital environments and to external clients.
To assist participate with quality assurance surveys within diagnostic radiology departments including intra oral and OPT dental equipment and mobile x-ray radiographic equipment.
To assist in the calibration service of contamination monitors provided to departments that use unsealed radioactive sources.
Assist an up-to-date list of calibration dates for diagnostic radiology dosimeters. schedule, assist and organise the calibration of this equipment.
Assist and perform radioactive sample counting on patient samples, wipe test samples and sealed sources including monthly calibration of sample counting test equipment.
Assist with monthly radioactive waste management process.
Assist in maintaining an up-to-date sealed source register.

The Directorate of Medical Imaging & Medical Physics (MIMP) is the largest Service Directorate within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Medical Physics employs 135 staff (35 scientists and 100 technical staff) providing a variety of scientific and clinical services to the Trust. The Department of Medical Physics is divided into 6 sections each managed by a Section Head responsible to the Scientific Director.
Radiology Physics offers a comprehensive and high quality radiation protection and QA service.
We provide services internally to STH and externally to other NHS and private healthcare services including hospitals, GP surgeries, dentists and vets, to industry, education and to other users of ionising radiation. A consultancy service is also provided to international pharmaceutical companies, public bodies and commercial industry for training, x-ray protection and disposal of health and other radioactive waste.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 24 months due to this being an apprenticeship/training programme. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts.
A learner/applicant must be a UK, EEA, or EU resident for at least the past three years to undertake an apprenticeship training programme.

- Previous experience in a technical role
- Previous experience of working in an NHS hospital
