Job overview
We are looking for one whole-time Consultant in Orthopaedics to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at the Northern General Hospital.
We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.
Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.
Main duties of the job
1. The appointee, together with consultant colleagues will be responsible for providing an elective Foot and Ankle surgery service across the two sites.
2. The post holder will participate on a rota, in providing Orthopaedic Trauma cover.
3. This post will enable the successful applicant to develop their elective surgery interests, subject to the needs of the service, to complement existing consultant staff.
4. The appointee will undertake outpatient clinics, elective operating sessions, on-call, pre-op assessment clinics, ward round duties and associated administration.
5. The new Consultant will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the Foot and Ankle service and will be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence.
6. The successful candidate will take part in the training programme at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The University of Sheffield will give the appointee an honorary senior clinical lectureship, subject to its regulations.
7. Research will be encouraged, and support can be requested.
8. The post holder will work with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways in line with the maximum 18-week patient pathway guarantee.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview
- If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Recognised Foot and Ankle Fellowship
Desirable criteria
- MD or PhD or equivalent
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to work as an independent practitioner in Foot and Ankle Surgery.
- Possess broad clinical experience in the general aspects of the speciality, including evidence of sub-speciality training
Research
Essential criteria
- Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
Desirable criteria
- Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
Teaching and Training
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels.
CPD
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
- Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio
Management and Administartion
Essential criteria
- Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with management groups
Clinical governance and Audit

- Experience in performing clinical audit

- Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project.

- The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC’ good medical practice (2013).
