As Consultant Nurse, you will provide clinical and professional leadership to enable the delivery of the Trust Medicines Optimisation strategy and work effectively across all four pillars of consultant practice (expert clinical practice, leadership, education and research). The post holder will be an autonomous clinical practitioner leading on the provision of expert practice in medicines optimisation ensuring better value and improved patient outcomes. The post holder will lead on developing and delivering multi-disciplinary advanced clinical practice and research, prescribing competence, quality, and safety supporting multiple professional disciplines across the organisation. In conjunction with the Trust Medicines Safety officer, you will lead on embedding the principles of medicines safety and medicines optimisation into clinical practice and contribute to policy developments to support safe practice.
MPFT Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation Directorate are looking for a dynamic, forward thinking Clinical Leader.
Main duties of the job
As a senior member of the clinical team, you will be expected to represent the Trust and participate in relevant local, regional and national sector wide forums related to non-medical prescribing and medicines optimisation. You will provide expert advice, clinical supervision and training to the non-medical prescribing workforce and partner organisations and have an opportunity to contribute to research and development projects within the service.
This role will be extremely rewarding, and requires a motivated, dynamic individual who is experienced in working at an operational level with a range of stakeholders and a track record for service development and delivering to agreed targets. The successful candidate will be provided with the support of a well-established team, opportunities to develop and embed their careers, and to make a difference to patients' lives.
You will be a qualified nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with excellent leadership and communication skills and have previous experience in education, training, quality improvement and policy development. The postholder is expected to deliver clinical care for at least 25% of their job plan with remaining time dedicated to leadership, education and training, quality improvement and research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Nurse Consultant for Medicines Optimisation
1. To work autonomously, within professional and Trust guidelines and to exercise
responsibility for the systematic governance of professional practice of nurses, nonregistered nursing staff and, where appropriate, other staff and to ensure that appropriate training, consultation and supervision structures are in place and consistent with national and Trust guidelines related to medicines optimisation practices and non-medical prescribing.
2. Act as a facilitator in raising the profile of and addressing medicine management issues relevant to nursing/AHP staff across the Trust to ensure nurses/registered professionals carry out their responsibilities with regard to medicines management.
3. Leading and developing the provision, training, monitoring and reviews of effective and evidence-based practice in medicines optimisation or all non-medical prescribers and the wider nursing workforce.
4. To influence and lead on medicines optimisation initiatives (e.g. deprescribing/ overprescribing QI programmes) at a Trust wide level, leading on major developmental projects that impact Trust wide.
5. Establish and maintain annual audit and/ or quality improvement programme that assesses and benchmarks nursing clinical and administration practices across the Trust.
6. To provide specialist advice and support to multi-professionals across care groups relating to safe medicines management in line with national regulatory framework, legislations and Trust policies
7. To establish and develop proactive and positive relationships with professional leads/key staff groups across Care groups communicating important information about safe evidence-based cost-effective medicines practices.
8. Support nursing, pharmacy and allied health professionals staff involved in medicines management related patient safety events in line with Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) principles/ competency assessment
9. Provision of analysis of prescribing data with recommendation where appropriate to optimise the cost-effective use of medicines.
10. Provide professional input and support in relation to the development and implementation of the e-Prescribing (EPMA) & Medicines Administration system and other medicines digital programmes
11. Establish and maintain standards, guidelines and protocols that advance nursing and multiprofessional practice relating to medicines management, promoting and implementing within the Trust.
12. Working closely with the Trust Pharmacy team; develop and provide a programme of training to ensure that practices relating to medicines management are of the highest standards.
13. Work with Higher Education Institutions and Trust Partners on the delivery of and further development of the Non-Medical Prescribing curriculum
14. Work with wider nursing leadership and operational groups on raising the profile and
associated risks relating to medicines within such groups.
15. Develop and maintain a robust assurance framework that evidences compliance to the ethos, principles and content of the Trust’s Medicines Code efficiently that enables effective translation into nursing practice across all clinical delivery systems.
16. To ensure risk assessments are carried out and risk management plans and
strategies implemented according to policy and procedure.
17. Support SI reviews and medication incidents, informing changes in practice and
working across Trust nurse & operational leadership.
18. Work closely with Trust Medication Safety Officer to review medicines incident
trends and ensure learning is taken and applied to practice; supporting improvement plans as needed.
19. Support services to assist service users in safe self-administration of prescribed
medicines in line with the Medicines Code in designated services
20. Provide quarterly assurance reports to the Medicines Optimisation Committee and Nursing Director on issues relevant to the CQC Core Standard in relation to Medicines Optimisation and make recommendations where appropriate
