Job overview

Are you an experienced RMN (Registered Mental Health Nurse) looking to advance and diversify your career as a nurse?  Why not break into prison healthcare?

Our Integrated Mental Health and Substance Misuse Team at HMP Swinfen Hall is looking for a dynamic and experienced registered mental health nurse.  Our team is innovative, forward thinking and committed to a recovery focused approach.

This is an exciting and diverse role for an individual who is passionate about providing excellent quality nursing care.  You will have the privilege to influence and shape the provision of high-quality mental health care to some of society’s most vulnerable members.

If you:

  • are an RMN who has a flexible approach, with a drive to clinically innovate;
  • share our values and are committed to providing high quality care and developing your skills;
  • have confidence in dealing with a wide range of situations and working with partner agencies to provide the best care to people within the prison;
  • are enthusiastic about working within an ever-changing prison environment;
  • enjoy collaborating and working within a  full multi-disciplinary team to ensure varied and comprehensive interventions are delivered in-line with the stepped care model;
  • have an excellent working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and its application to prisoners who require transfer to hospital;

then this job is for you!

Main duties of the job

Working effectively within the team you will provide evidence based interventions.  You will manage a caseload and will be required to undertake assessments and reviews.   Using the Care Programme Approach, you will be a care coordinator, communicating effectively with those involved in the care of people in custody up to release.    The role will require you to be a reflective practitioner, eager to work collaboratively with individuals, carers and other professionals to contribute to the delivery of an effective, dynamic, integrated mental health and substance misuse service.

You will work with individuals from initial assessment through to discharge, which can include transferring care to other providers such as hospitals or CMHTs whilst working with a variety of agencies in the Offender Health Pathway.  You will help to rehabilitate and support service users to live hopeful and fulfilling lives as members of the community.

Inclusion (part of Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust) has prison substance misuse and mental health teams across the country and you will benefit from training and development opportunities as well as the support of an NHS employer experienced in providing prison healthcare for many years.
