Job overview

The North Staffordshire Wellbeing Service is an innovative primary care mental health service that has built on it’s success as a high performing IAPT site. We are a multidisciplinary team providing a range of effective treatments for a broad range of emotional and physical health problems in primary care. An opportunity has arisen for a qualified Primary care counsellor to join our team delivering high quality evidence-based treatment for depression. We are looking for qualified Counsellors – with a Degree or Diploma in Counselling ( Person Centred ) BACP Accredited / UKCP Registered/actively working towards.

We provide high quality clinical and management supervision to facilitate this, as well as regular clinical skills training, CPD and personal development opportunities.

 

 

Main duties of the job

Candidates will have experience or be prepared to work with patients face to face and remotely via video conferencing or telephone. Although currently many of our staff are working remotely during COVID 19, we would expect a commitment to working from base and face to face patient work in the near future, with some remote working likely.

We require enthusiastic, professional counsellors who are able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, and also be able to meet specified targets in order to deliver a high-quality service to the local population

In return the successful candidates will need to be flexible, evidence reliability, and demonstrate the ability to cope with the demands of a busy service and display the highest levels of knowledge, skills and professional standards.

Promoting excellence in the delivery of evidence based treatment we are committed to continuing clinical training/development, supervision and support for all therapists. The service has valuable experience, and proven performance in IAPT service delivery. Covering some of the most beautiful countryside of the Peak District National Park, we are a very friendly team, committed to promoting the wellbeing of our workers, as well as our clients.

As a centre for research as well as clinical practice, we work in partnership with Staffordshire and Keele Universities. All therapists contribute to on-going clinical research projects, and are actively encouraged to pursue their own research interests.

The service covers Newcastle-under-Lyme, and the Leek/Staffordshire Moorlands areas. We are seeking a BACP Accredited / Accreditable counsellor who will deliver clinical sessions in designated GP practices and primary care clinics, spending time in the Wellbeing Team Base as required.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

-To utilize theory, evidence based literature and research to support evidence based practice in clinical work.

-To use a contractual approach to client work offering structured time limited interventions.

- To use psychological measures and outcomes 

- To maintain proper and appropriate liaison with GP’s regarding client care

- To establish and maintain a safe, comfortable therapeutic environment for clients who may be distressed.

- To use an agreed outcome evaluation system in monitoring clinical outcomes for individual clients

- To signpost / refer on clients where appropriate and to discuss with the Line Manager and/or the clinical Supervisor any inappropriate clients or clients where an obvious course of action is not clear.

- To provide discharge summary for referring GP’s and other professionals

- To attend  clinical supervision meetings

- To establish good clinical management practices to ensure high standards of care

- To provide specialist counseling advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals .

-To undertake risk assessments and risk management for all clients.

- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for caseload management and for the assessment and treatment of clients.

- To exercise high level listening skills and to routinely employ empathetic response skills.

Administration duties:

To be responsible for all administration duties involved in the smooth running of the service.

- To collate and provide data on the IAPTUS patient management system

- To be responsible for keeping and maintaining appropriate clinical records

- To adhere to the boundaries of confidentiality and code of Ethics for practice defined by a professional body e.g. BACP, BPS

Professional Development

- To ensure the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice through active participation in internal and external CPD programmes and study: and maintain an awareness of current developments in the field of mental health and primary care counselling and related fields

- To participate in regular professional supervision and appraisal

- To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation national and local policies and issues in relation to the specific client group and the field of primary care mental health counselling.

- To undertake, if needed, further training in in an IAPT Additional Modality

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Counselling qualification of at least diploma level recognised by an appropriate regulatory body ( e.g. BPS, BACP, UKCP)
  • Accredited (or working towards) with an appropriate regulatory body ( e.g. BPS, BACP, UKCP)
  • Significant experience of working with people suffering common mental health problems
  • Ability to work to established protocols regarding length and type of intervention
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and as a part of a team
  • Possession of excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively across all disciplines and at all levels
  • Good level of awareness of primary care mental health issues
Desirable criteria
  • Training/Accreditation in an IAPT “Additional Modality” e.g. IPT, DIT, CfD
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS
  • To be able to offer peer support and supervision when required
