Job overview
This developmental post is an opportunity to undertake a structured and supported learning pathway which will provide skills and competence to work within a busy integrated sexual health environment.
The post holder will be supported to complete training in all aspects of sexual health within a two-year time scale.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for the post holder, as is an enthusiastic approach to learning and development.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will assess, plan and deliver key aspects of sexual health care depending on the knowledge, skills and experience of the practitioner, and it is expected that care delivery will evolve through learning and development.
Service delivery will include the promotion/issuing of all methods of contraception, screening for sexual transmitted infections (STIs), perform diagnostic procedures and provide treatment and management of STIs in line with BASHH and NICE guidance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Provides a confidential, safe environment so patients can discuss any sexual health issues and refer to Specialist Nurses or Health Advisers should complex issues arise.
- Undertakes an assessment for implementing a holistic approach to individual focused care.
- Provides all service users with appropriate and relevant information regarding their diagnosis, treatment or method of chosen contraception.
- Issues prescription only medication under Patient Group Directions (PGDs), once fully competent, depending on patient need.
- To undertake and achieve competency to be able to provide a full range of contraception and STI care, including microscopy to support diagnosis.
- Accesses staff supervision / appraisal and attends team meetings and teaching sessions.
- Links in with the wider sexual health teams to provide networking and information.
- Utilises the service’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Provides support to the clinic manager for implementing any new ways of working or developments within the sexual health service.
