We are looking for ODPs and Nurses to join our Theatre team.

Our Trust has excellent opportunities for experienced and newly qualified Band 5 Theatre Practitioners to develop, enhance, consolidate and excel in their Theatre Skills.

Our Operating Theatres are expanding and are currently undergoing refurbishment in preparation for the exciting challenge of rebuilding our service. We are a rapidly developing department, catering for a wide range of specialties, electively or in a trauma situation.

It is an essential requirement to possess recent out of hours experience along with the recent out of hours surgical first assistant.

Please note that West Suffolk Professionals are not able to support sponsorship roles due not being able to offer guaranteed hours on Bank.

Main duties of the job

To maintain a high standard of evidence based patient care under the direction of the team leader. To work within the standards set by the department, the Trust and the appropriate Regulatory Body

To work as a competent member of the multidisciplinary theatre team, taking every opportunity to extend knowledge and skills

To provide care to patients in the Perioperative / Day Surgery / Theatre / PACU setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job responsibilities:
KEY TASKS:


• Ensure practice is in accordance with the NMC/HCPC code of conduct and within limits of competence
• With appropriate training and supervision, undertake a full range of theatre duties in the anaesthetic / 
surgical / recovery role
• Ensure that patient safety, dignity, confidentiality and comfort are paramount.
• Ensure patients’ rights are respected and act as their advocate when needed.
• Ensure that skilled care is given to patients and that all drugs and treatments are administered as prescribed 
and documented in accordance with Trust policy.
• Prepare and assemble specialist equipment and instrumentation
• Ensure that effective communication takes place between patients, staff, relatives and carers as appropriate.
• Ensure that all practice is in accordance with established procedures and protocols, and conform to the units’ 
operational policy.
• Support and encourage the concept of team working and developing good working relationships within the 
department and within the Trust.
• Promote and support multi-disciplinary teamwork in the delivery of high standard of patient care in the 
perioperative setting
• Assess, monitor and evaluate the care needs of the peri-operative patient, gaining the comprehensive 
understanding of the patient's condition and reporting effectively to the appropriate person.
• Report any areas of concern to your line manager and/or Clinical Team Manager
• Act as an accountable practitioner taking every opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence in all aspects of perioperative care.

EDUCATIONAL


• Promote and maintain an environment conducive to learning and development for all staff.
• Support the educational and development needs of colleagues and trainees.

• Ensure the effective orientation of staff new to the Department.
• Identify own training, development and educational needs and agree with team leader.
• Be aware of the role of audit and research and update own practice with reference to research findings.

• Maintain a portfolio that reflects knowledge and skills acquired and demonstrates a commitment to 
professional development and satisfies the requirements of the NMC/HCPC as appropriate.
• Contribute to the philosophy of continual professional development by taking an active role in practice 
development and the review of clinical practices.
• Demonstrate a commitment to making best use of resources to ensure the maintenance and improvement 
of service delivery to patients and staff.
• Deputise for the Clinical Team Leader (B6) in his/her absence.
• Assist the Theatre Clinical Leader in providing leadership and facilitate appropriate skill mix for the Operating 
Theatre Lists.
• Demonstrate leadership by personal example, fostering good interpersonal relationships and
encouraging and developing high staff morale.
• Assist with Co-ordination of patient activity, staffing and utilisation within the clinical area in order to deliver 
high quality health care.
• Assist the Clinical Team Leader supervise the activity within the unit and share responsibility for setting 
standards and supervising safe clinical practice while adhering to West Suffolk Hospital Operating Theatre 
Guidlines.
• Ensure that thorough data recording is undertaken, both paper and electronic, to support robust statistical 
information gathering and recording.
• Act as a resource for the support and guidance of staff, patients and relatives.
• Contribute to the development and updating of training packages relating to specific areas and skills, in 
conjunction with the Clinical Team Leader and/or Professional Development lead

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level Nurse on part 1 or 12 of the NMC Register
  • ODA CG 752 / ODP NVQ Level 3 / DipHE ODP
  • HCPC Professional Registrant
Desirable criteria
  • ENB 998 or C&G 730
  • A1 Assessors award
  • ENB 176 /183/182 or equivalent
  • Preparation for Mentorship
  • Specific Theatre qualification or equivalent ability

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Interest and commitment to philosophy of the Theatre suite
  • Recent out of hours experience with recent out of hours surgical first assistant
Desirable criteria
  • Post-qualification experience in a peri-operative environment
  • Experience of staff supervision and training
