Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the West Suffolk Dietetic service.  The department consists of 43 Dietitians, Nurses, Support staff and administrators providing an integrated service to West Suffolk Hospital and the wider community.  The West Suffolk Dietetic service is forward thinking, innovative and friendly department.  We fully support and encourage self-development within our service.

We are seeking a Band 6 Paediatric Dietitian to join our dynamic paediatric team consisting of different specialities and general dietetics.  We are looking to recruit a dietitian that has some knowledge of paediatric dietetics and some experience of working with paediatric patients in a dietetic department.  There will be opportunities to develop your skills further in this area and training will be provided

Main duties of the job

The role will entail managing 2-3 clinics a week and providing dietetic care to patients residing on the paediatric ward at West Suffolk Hospital.  The postholder will be involved in carrying out audits and service development.  They will be fully supported by the senior paediatric dietitians .

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·       To effectively manage autonomously a clinical caseload, providing a high standard of nutrition and dietetic care to inpatients and outpatients and to undertake professional duties as a qualified dietitian.

·       To use evidence-based practice to undertake nutritional assessments of paediatric patients, analysing and interpreting complex patient information to develop and deliver care plans.

·       To work closely as part of the acute and community dietetic teams to provide a seamless service to the population of West Suffolk.

·       To provide training/ education for other health and social care professionals to enable sharing of best practice.

·       To supervise students and contribute to placement assessments.

·       To communicate effectively in both clinical and non-clinical settings.

·       To act as a nutritional resource in paediatrics to support and educate patients, parents, carers and train other dietitians, dietetic students, GPs and health professionals within the Trust and externally.

·       To support more junior staff working within Paediatric team.

·       To adapt and respond to periods of unexpected demand in order to provide appropriate paediatric inpatient cover as required.

Person specification

Education & Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Dietetics or equivalent
  • Current HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of BDA
  • Member of BDA Paediatric specialist group or other related specialist group

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Clinical experience of managing paediatric patients in a clinic setting
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice in enteral feeding
  • Previous experience of working in an NHS organisation
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and risk issues
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical experience in the management of paediatric enteral tube feeding and nutrition support
  • Experience of managing Safeguarding concerns in the community
  • Experience of supervising students

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Competent IT skills including Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
Desirable criteria
