Job overview

We are looking for an ambitious Plastic Surgery Consultant to work at the West Suffolk Hospital Foundation Trust on a fixed term contract. This is an exciting challenge for a Plastic Surgery specialist who is keen to get involved in delivering an excellent care and close connections with the Major Trauma Centre. There is also a fantastic opportunity to share and contribute your expertise into the future design and service of a new Plastic Surgery Department within the new build West Suffolk Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide appropriate plastic surgery services as directed

·         To offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty

·         To contribute to meeting the Surgical Directorate objectives

·         To undertake appropriate projects and administration as required by the department

  •  To provide clinical services in line with the Trust’s clinical governance arrangements, which are designed to ensure that, agreed quality standards are achieved

·         To undertake audit of clinical practice within the department to ensure that current standards and evidence-based practice are applied

  • All career doctors are required to maintain and develop their clinical skills.  Individual training and development needs will be identified through an appraisal process taking into account Royal College requirements.  Full utilisation of study leave is encouraged

·  To work within the Trust’s clinical risk management policies and in particular to participate as appropriate in critical incident reporting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will provide a general plastic surgery service with a special interest in skin cancer as directed by the Plastic Surgery department and pressure sore care.

The post holder will deliver 5 clinical sessions per week and will share their time between the outpatients clinic (main site and peripheral sites), theatres (main theatres/DSU/minor ops at Newmarket).

  • To share with colleague’s responsibility for the day-to-day management of Plastic Surgery service.
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Plastic Surgery
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, para-medical practitioners.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audits.
  • Responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FRCS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate thesis
  • • Entry on the GMC specialist register or be eligible for entry (within six months of attaining Certificate of Completion of Training) at the time of interview

Clinical Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in general and colorectal surgery
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
Desirable criteria
  • Six years supervised training in an appropriate SpR or equivalent training programme
  • Fellowship level experience in reconstruction and/or sub specialty training
  • Special interest in pressure sore care and skin cancer as directed by the Plastic Surgery department.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in General Surgery

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the plastic surgery firm.
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities/theatre lists, waiting lists
  • Ability to lead and manage clinical teams
  • Evidence of experience of audit management
  • Understanding of actions required when dealing with concerns about professional practice and to handle and to resolve complaints
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the plastic surgery firm. Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities/theatre lists, waiting lists • Ability to lead and manage clinical teams, • Evidence of experience of audit management • Understanding of actions required when dealing with concerns about professional practice and to handle and to resolve complaints, • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets, • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or have the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS)-Overall 7.5. Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7. (If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills, but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence)

Teaching/ Education Experience

  • Experience of supervising junior surgical staff
  • Ability to teach clinical skills

  • Evidence of successfully completed attendance of a recognised training the trainers course or equivalent
