Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Dermatology Department is based at West Suffolk Hospital but provides peripheral clinics to the surrounding towns of Thetford and Sudbury.

The appointee will work closely with the Dermatology Consultants already in post as well as the Clinical Nurse Specialists.

The specialist nurses share care for patients with chronic disease on second-line treatment. They provide pre-treatment counselling for systemic and biologic treatments and see new patients with acne and psoriasis. Our skin cancer specialist nurse team provides support and counselling for tumour patients.

Surgical cases are carried out in the Day Surgery Unit or Out-patient theatre under local anaesthetic. The list size depends on the case mix. The complexity of cases will be decided by the post-holder. Surgical treatment of benign lesions is restricted, as per guidelines issued by the local ICB. West Suffolk Hospital has a plastic surgery service with four consultant plastic surgeons in post, with whom the dermatology team work closely as part of the skin cancer LSMDT. The skin cancer SSMDT is overseen by the team at Addenbrookes.

Paediatric dermatology is run in close cooperation with the paediatricians in the Rainbow outpatient clinic in the Children’s unit. Children are admitted under the paediatricians and emergency referrals for children as inpatients are as per shared rota. We have support from our paediatricians who help with eczema follow up and skin prick testing/allergen advice. We have close links with the paediatric dermatology unit/plastic surgery in Addenbrookes hospital and tertiary referrals are sent to Great Ormond Street children’s hospital.
The Phototherapy Unit has facilities for narrow-band UVB.
