Diabetes Clinic Healthcare Assistant
NHS AfC: Band 3

The post holder will work as part of the local specialist diabetes team, as an autonomous practitioner in the provision of evidence based and high-quality diabetes care within the diabetes outpatient team. The Health Care Assistant role within the Diabetes Service is to work in clinics to provide care and support for all patients attending the integrated diabetes service. The post holder will participate in the delivery of care interventions and undertake delegated tasks such as blood pressure, blood glucose testing, provide assistance during various clinics, and health promotion interventions without direct supervision, reporting to a Registered Practitioner. As a member of the diabetes team it is important that you are able to prioritise and contribute to the delivery of high standards of care to patients, families and their carers in a safe and supportive environment under the direction of a registered practitioner. As part of the wider team you will also be asked to assist in developing and maintaining services provided to patients and contribute to the safe, efficient and smooth running of the clinical area/department.

To work with the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of dedicated out-patient service to patients with Type I & Type 2 diabetes across West Suffolk.
Assist the organisation and efficiency of supporting a clinic and undertake initial administrative tasks for people attending diabetes clinics
To provide care during clinics working within local guidelines and hospital policy.
Attend and contribute to regular team meetings
Undertake simple nursing procedures under the supervision and direction of the Diabetes Specialist Nurse. Such duties to include: • Blood glucose and HbA1c testing • Blood pressure measurements • Downloading CGMS • Downloading of meters and Pumps • Height/weight/waist circumference
Ensure adequate supplies for Diabetes clinics e.g. meters, blood glucose strips, sensors etc., are available for clinics and when appropriate order stock.

The West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds provides acute and secondary care services (emergency department, maternity and neonatal services, day surgery unit, eye treatment centre, Macmillan unit and children's ward). It has 500+ beds and is a partner teaching hospital of the University of Cambridge.
