Lung Cancer Screening Nurse Specialist

Job overview

The Lung Cancer Screening Support Nurse plays a key role in delivering a high-quality, patient-centred lung cancer screening service. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the post-holder supports the coordination, and follow-up of individuals referred for lung health checks and low-dose CT screening.

Main duties of the job

The nurse provides expert guidance, health education, and holistic support to patients throughout the screening pathway, ensuring they fully understand the purpose of screening, potential outcomes, and next steps.

The role requires excellent communication, compassion, and organisational skills, with a strong focus on early detection, reducing health inequalities, and promoting positive health behaviours. The Lung Cancer Screening Support Nurse contributes to service development, maintains accurate documentation, and upholds clinical quality and safety standards to improve outcomes for people at risk of lung cancer.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN (level 1)
  • Teaching and assessing in clinical practice qualification
  • Evidence of relevant post registration study
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of studying at a minimum of level 3 (first degree)
  • MSc level or working towards.
  • Counselling skills

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Proven post registration experience
  • A broad range of experience working with patients and their families who have complex psychosocial needs
  • Able to evidence knowledge of clinical audit and research process
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Understanding of clinical trials IT literate (MS office, Excel, Word)
Desirable criteria
  • Proven post registration experience within respiratory medicine.
  • Can demonstrate evidence of service development, implementing change, audit, and research
  • Use of relevant pharmacology to provide advice to patients/carers/other professionals
  • Experience of teaching and assessing in clinical practice
  • Relevant band 6 experience
