Job overview

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity an highly motivated and ambitious registered nurse to join our preassessment team to help the service meet the challenges of elective surgery.

The key role of the successful candidate will be to undertake the preassessment of elective surgical patients using specialised history taking and clinical skills. You should be able to manage your own case load. You will use your experience and clinical skills to provide guidance and support to patients waiting for elective surgery

  • A passion for delivering an excellent patient-focus service
  • Experience in a Preadmissions Unit or Medical/Surgical areas
  • Ability to obtain an in-depth patient history and screen patient medical records
  • Physical assessment skills 
  • Experience in autonomous working
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills
  • Be able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when working with others
  • Teaching and mentorship experience.
  • Willingness to undertake further development and training as required

Main duties of the job

Early screening of patients medical  records 

Preassessment of elective surgical patients,  face to face and telephone assessments

Ensuring patients are safely prepared for surgery

Checking patient investigation results

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

The post holder will be required to work as a competent member of the Pre-Admission Unit team to provide safe and effective high quality care under the direction of the senior members of the clinical staff. To work in accordance with the standards set by the Nursing/Midwifery Professional Bodies, and with the Trust Nursing Policies and Guidelines.

Be an accountable practitioner, taking every opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.

If required, to take charge of unit in the absence of senior of the nursing team

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN Level 1 NMC Registered
  • ENB
  • IT skills
  • Physical assessment or Pre- assessment course.
  • Experience in Preassessment Unit or Surgical areas
Desirable criteria
  • Nursing degree or working towards

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience
  • Demonstration of professional development
  • Knowledge of the management of Inpatients and Outpatient pathways
  • Multidisciplinary team working
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Nice Guidelines applicable to preassessment

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to assess pre-operative patients without any immediate supervision.
  • Experience of nursing in a variety of surgical specialities.
  • Excellent clinical skills.
  • Ability to assess care needs and to facilitate timely and appropriate investigations and interventions.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn and develop new skills
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Ability to remain calm & work effectively in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of evidenced based best practice ensuring quality patient care.
