Job overview

We are seeking an ambitious and dedicated Senior Nurse with strong leadership skills and relevant experience to join our Trauma and Orthopaedic ward.

Ward F3 is a 34 bedded high performing trauma and orthopaedic ward caring for patients with musculoskeletal injuries. Our busy Trauma and Orthopaedic ward contributes to our consistent excellent performance across KPI’s from the National Hip Fracture Database.

The post holder will be responsible for overseeing the management of our high-performing Trauma and Orthopaedic ward. The successful candidate will offer support and assurance to the senior nursing team, whilst providing effective leadership and guidance to a team comprising Registered Nurses and Healthcare Support Workers. This role will ensure that the care delivered to patients adheres to the recognised standards established by clinical governance, as well as the high patient care standards championed by West Suffolk Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Main duties:

  • Lead on the day-to-day running of the ward, acting as a professional role model providing sound clinical leadership, maintaining morale and promoting effective team work
  • Promote a positive culture that values and supports staff to reach their full potential
  • Lead on recruitment, selection and induction process
  • Ensure ongoing performance review for ward team
  • Maintain  clinical skills by working as part of the ward team
  • Encourage and promote continuous quality improvement
  • Take overall responsibility of timely completion of duty rotas
  • Maintain accurate sickness records and performance related issues
  • Lead on timely investigation of clinical incidents and provide feedback to the team
  • Participate in the staffing bleep rota, co-ordinating staff and providing senior clinical support
  • Participate in service development projects

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • NMC Registered Nurse
  • • Evidence of post basic continuing professional development
  • • Teaching/Mentoring Qualification
  • • An interest in leadership
Desirable criteria
  • • ALS/EPLS
  • • Master’s Degree

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Relevant experience at Band 6
  • • Significant experience within Acute surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Experience at Band 7 nurse level
