Job overview
Be responsible for providing a range of personal care to patients and for carrying out a range of clinical duties under the guidance of a registered healthcare professional. Undertake high quality, caring and compassionate personal care/clinical and associated duties under the direction and supervision of the registered professional both independently and working as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
As an Imaging assistant you make a valuable and important contribution to the delivery of high-quality healthcare in the Trust and at our community sites. Your role is to support the registered professional in the delivery of safe, effective, compassionate care to patients and their relatives.
Main duties of the job
- Work under the direction of a registered healthcare professional, participating in clinical care, prioritising workload appropriately and meeting competencies that safeguard practice and effectiveness.
- Work as part of a clinical care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual, in a co-operative, professional and constructive manner.
- Assist patients with personal hygiene and toileting.
- Prepare and support patients for a range of radiological examinations and procedures ensuring confidentiality and patient privacy is maintained.
- Support moving and handling, use of mobility aids, correct patient positioning, and observe for pressure areas and skin integrity. Report findings to service manager/senior colleague if appropriate.
- Proactively review patient’s medical record/history to obtain relevant information in order to proceed with the examination/procedure for example e-GFR and previous imaging. Seek advice from senior radiographer or nurse if below set threshold.
- Organise/book relevant additional tests as required to ensure appropriate patient management and preparation e.g. pre- hydration requirements.
- Develop positive relationships with parents, families and carers as required for the duration of the examination/procedure. This involves developing trust and confidence in a very short space of time.
- Be aware of the patient’s needs – emotional, social, physical, and cultural. Respect privacy, dignity and beliefs. Acts in a way that supports equality and diversity values.

- Reducing obesity
- Smoking cessation
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Person specification
Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Good level of written language and IT skills
- • NVQ level 3 or equivalent or has equivalent clinical experience.
- • Evidence of ongoing CPD
Desirable criteria
- • Previous experience of being an Imaging Assistant or Health Care Support Worker
- • GCSE English Language and Maths A to C or 4 -9 or functional skills or equivalent
Experience and knowledge
Essential criteria
- • Experience of working / communicating with the public.
- • Communication with a range of different people including service users, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.
- • Demonstrate through previous experience the ability to escalate concerns.
- • Ability to work alone or in small team.
- • Demonstrates an awareness of the importance of keeping the clinical environment safe and clean.
Desirable criteria
- • Experience of working in a healthcare team environment
- • Evidence of research and understanding into Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Skills and abilities
Essential criteria
- • Good communication skills (written and verbal)
- • Plan and prioritise own workload.
- • Able to manage and organise own time effectively.
- • Ability to undertake extended tasks appropriate to competence.
- • To demonstrate initiative
- • Ability to support patients.
- • Demonstrate awareness with MRI safety issues.
- • Demonstrate the promotion of equality, diversity and rights of others.
- • Ability to complete patient records in accordance with policies and procedures.
Desirable criteria
- • Able to cope when patients are distressed or emotional. (Training and support will be provided)
- • Desire to learn.
