West Suffolk Professionals are pleased to be able to offer an exciting opportunity for Sonographers who would like to join our friendly, passionate and supportive team on Bank.
We are looking to support our team to support the opening of our Newmarket CDC; successful candidates should expect they will be required to work across West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, including the Newmarket CDC and other community sites (Thetford, Botesdale and Sudbury) on a rotational basis.
The successful candidate will need to be self-motivated, diligent, and committed to providing an excellent service to our patients. You will be required to obtain high quality ultrasound images and diagnostic reports within the hospital and community settings.
STAFF CAR PARKING
Staff Car Parking on the West Suffolk Hospital Site is eligible for individuals working outside of the core hours, 07:00 - 18:30.
For individuals working within the core hours, the Trust offers parking off site at the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, which is serviced by a regular shuttle bus to and from the Hospital. Details of the bus timetable can be found in the on-line starter pack on the West Suffolk Hospital website.
This parking restriction does not apply if an individual is required to work on a weekend or if they are required to complete "on call" duties within their role.
Please note that West Suffolk Professionals are not able to offer sponsorship roles as we are not able to offer guarantee hours on Bank.
Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for:
Producing high-quality ultrasound images and diagnostic reports autonomously.
Maintaining high standards within the ultrasound team
Training and supervising others, including supporting new staff in induction.
Teaching and promoting awareness and compliance with policies and protocols
Participating in and supporting the governance programme, setting up ultrasound audits where necessary
Participate in the ultrasound QA programme.
Work with other senior staff to ensure essential departmental administration and organisation is undertaken
The care of the patient for the duration of their time in ultrasound, maintaining dignity, physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs
Ensuring all personal mandatory training is kept up to date
Carrying out tasks delegated by the Superintendent Sonographer

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Provision of the highest standard ultrasound imaging service. Contribute to the day-to-day organisation of ultrasound services, prioritising workload according to the clinical urgency, liaising with patients, clinicians and other hospital staff.
To work unsupervised in a specialist area with autonomy making judgements on appropriate examination and patient management.
Effectively communicate with all grades of staff, carers and patients with adaptation of skills when necessary using appropriate language and style for the varied situations. Counselling skills will be required.
Manipulate complex, expensive equipment. To be responsible for the management of patients’ images and data including processing, archiving, and copying if required.
To ensure that all examinations are fully, accurately and concisely reported and made available for clinicians to act on.
To carry out tasks delegated by the Ultrasound Service Manager.
To be involved in discussion, setting up and implementation of new policies for the ultrasound service.
To set and maintain high standards within the ultrasound team. Be able to train and supervise others in working towards those standards.
Encourage cohesive working arrangements within a small unit and all other working areas, monitoring patient throughput and redistributing where necessary.
Be proficient in controlling violence and aggression and talk down skills for when working single-handed with patients and/or relatives.
Be proficient in IT skills such as retrieval images on the trusts computerised r radiography systems and work stations as well as the patient archiving and communication system.
Participate in setting up and implementation of quality assurance procedures.
Support new staff in induction. Teach and promote awareness and compliance with policies and protocols.
Undertake teaching and supervision of students as required; training can be provided if necessary.
Maintain and record Continued Professional Development. Participate in formal appraisal programme.
Participate in and support the governance programme, setting up ultrasound audits where necessary.
Participate and support the Quality Assurance (QA) programme of the ultrasound machines.
Be aware of and practice safe working, adjusting equipment height and position maintaining good posture to protect from musculoskeletal disorders.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Qualified Sonographer/Midwife Sonographer with recognised post graduate qualification in medical or clinical ultrasound (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- HCPC Registration
- Specialist training eg vascular
- Knowledge of the QSI accreditation process
- Full driving license
Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 1- year post-qualification clinical experience in ultrasound within the NHS
- Interest and experience in gynaecology and obstetric ultrasound procedures
Desirable criteria
- Open to the acquisition of new skills in line with service requirements
