Job overview
We are looking for a passionate and committed Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedics with a specialist interest in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery to join the team at the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Bury St Edmunds.
The individual appointed to the post will have completed orthopaedic training and have completed or be undertaking a training fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery. They will need to share desire to deliver highest standard care to patient presenting with a wide range of paediatric orthopaedic problems within a DGH setting.

Main duties of the job
• Provision of Trauma and Orthopaedic services, to the highest clinical standards in particular to lead in the development of a subspecialist service in paediatric orthopaedics
• To share with colleagues’ responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department
• Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, para-medical practitioners.
• To participate actively in both Departmental and Trust Clinical Governance and Audit.
• To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME), appraisal and revalidation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Department would like to appoint a surgeon who has a broad ability in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery but with a special interest and expertise in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery. Recognised fellowship in this field is big advantage.
We are an innovative department who work well together and are looking for someone to join our team. The role will not involve being on the adult 1:10 on call rota but will require the candidate to support on call cases when paediatric specialty input is required.
This post may involve cross site working both at a local peripheral community hospital and the child development centre within Bury St Edmunds. In addition, we are looking to establish and arrangement with Addenbrooke’s Hospital to allow the appointee to attend MDT clinics as well as have opportunities to dual consultant operate on complex cases.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- FRCS orth. or Success in appropriate overseas Specialty examination
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery and hold a licence to practise or be eligible for entry on the Register (within six months of completion of Certificate of Completion of Training) at time of interview.
Desirable criteria
- ATLS Instructor
Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- A wide experience of orthopaedic and trauma surgery
- Expertise in most if not all aspects of paediatric orthopaedic conditions.
- Clinical training and experience to the level required for gaining a UK CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
Desirable criteria
- Six years supervised training in an appropriate SpR level training programme
- Fellowship level training in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery.
- Evidence of contribution to the development of clinical guidelines/pathways for paediatric orthopaedics
- Interest in cerebral palsy.
Management Abilty
Essential criteria
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
- Ability to organise and manage out patient priorities, waiting lists and operating lists
- Ability to manage and lead surgical firm
- Experience of audit management
- Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
- mandatory deanery requirement of clinical supervisor training ( or an undertaking to complete this after appointment )
Desirable criteria
- Willingness to take on managerial tasks.
Teaching/Education
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising junior doctors (FY1, FY2, ST1/2 and SpRs).
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching on regional/national/international courses
Research
Essential criteria
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
Desirable criteria
- Intention to initiate and lead research programmes.
Clinical Governance
Essential criteria
- Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
- Commitment to following NICE guidance
- Commitment to national audits eg NJR, NHFD
