Lead Health Information Specialist – Urgent Care

We are seeking an exceptional analytical leader to join our Health Information Services team. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence decision-making at every level of the organisation by transforming complex health data into meaningful insight that drives service improvement and enhances patient care.

As a senior member of the department, you will lead the Urgent Care information function with confidence and autonomy, providing expert guidance across urgent and emergency care, maternity and endoscopy reporting. You will play a central role in shaping how data is captured, interpreted and applied within our Electronic Patient Record, ensuring clinicians and operational teams have access to accurate, timely and actionable intelligence.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Analytical & Technical Leadership

  • Interpret and resolve highly complex healthcare data challenges with precision and clarity
  • Present sensitive or intricate findings in a clear, engaging and accessible way
  • Translate advanced analytical and statistical concepts into practical insight for non-specialist audiences
  • Design and deliver high-quality reports, dashboards and intelligence products
  • Collaborate with system partners to enhance data alignment and shared understanding

Service Improvement & Quality

  • Provide trusted expert advice to both strategic and operational stakeholders
  • Lead initiatives to enhance the quality, consistency and usability of data within the Electronic Patient Record
  • Empower clinical and operational teams by building data literacy through training and ongoing support
  • Contribute to service redesign and the development of forward-thinking policies
  • Uphold the highest standards in data governance, methodology and analytical practice

Leadership & Management

  • Lead, motivate and develop the Urgent Care information team, fostering a culture of excellence
  • Support senior leadership in delivering continuous improvement across analytics services
  • Manage a diverse portfolio of complex workstreams, ensuring priorities are met effectively
  • Set clear expectations and provide guidance on analytical standards and best practice

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to master’s degree level or relevant professional qualification or hold equivalent experience within an information or performance-related role
Desirable criteria
  • Project management qualification or equivalent experience (e.g. Agile, PRINCE2)
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience
  • EPIC Cogito certification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Undertaking complex information analysis, generating insights and making recommendations to improve clinical and operational services
  • Identifying problems and devising solutions where no precedent exists
  • Building structured datasets to enable a single source of truth for reporting and analysis
  • Creating clear and actionable reports and dashboards in association with service users
  • Training and supporting clinical and operational subject matter experts to use self-service reporting tools
  • Planning and delivering complex information projects
  • Managing staff, including training, appraisal and performance management
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of NHS urgent and emergency care reporting
  • Using EPIC Electronic Patient Record
  • Contributing to long term organisational planning
  • Organising and processing feedback to enable continuous improvement in your team’s performance
  • Working with NHS ICB information teams

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Extensive knowledge of NHS information and performance standards, practices and data flows
  • Advanced Microsoft SQL query writing techniques and use of Microsoft Excel; knowledge of relational database architecture
  • Analysing, interpreting and comparing highly complex data sets, benchmarking against national performance where possible.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including presenting complex, confidential or conflicting information to non-technical audiences
  • Formulating and adapting long term plans in the face of uncertainty and competing priorities
  • Designing, adapting and improving information systems and data flows; ensuring high-quality data input, storage and reporting
  • Acting autonomously within departmental policies; setting standards for others; working in a small team with limited supervision
  • Excellent inter-personal and negotiation skills to influence and inspire others

  • Knowledge of clinical terminology
  • Knowledge of current NHS issues and potential barriers to use of data for supporting change
  • Developing and implementing training programmes
