Job overview

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Band 6 Telephone Triage Midwife to join our maternity team located in Bicester on a full-time basis. 

This is an important role providing timely, safe and compassionate clinical advice to women and families contacting our maternity service. Working within the Telephone Triage Service, you will use your clinical expertise to assess concerns, identify risk, provide appropriate advice and ensure women are directed to the right care at the right time.

You will need to be a confident and experienced midwife with excellent communication skills, sound clinical judgement and the ability to make safe decisions while working autonomously.

Part-time hours or a job-share can be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as a midwife and a member of the midwifery team in all areas of the maternity service as required – i.e. Community, Antenatal Ward, Labour Ward, Postnatal Ward, Transitional Care Unit, Birth Centre, Antenatal Clinic, Maternity Assessment Centre, Maternity Triage and the Telephone Triage Service. 
  • All midwife practitioners will be Registered Midwives, accountable for their own midwifery practice and will be able to fulfil the following role through the ability to make decisions with current protocols and principles of care in compliance with the NMC’s Midwives Rules and Code of Midwifery Practice.
  • This midwife will be experienced and will be able to demonstrate experience in all aspects of antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. 
  • She/he will be expected to continue with post-registration education and development to become a confident midwife able to provide care with the women either in the community or hospital environment.
  • The post holder is required to take responsibility as a prime care provider in either the hospital or community setting. 
    She/he will be confident in providing midwife led care.

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Current on the NMC register
  • Mentorship / PSPA / SLIP qualification
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Completed preceptorship.
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership / management training
  • Audit experience
  • Registered nurse

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of collaborative care/referral with other agencies related to maternity care.
  • Up to date experience within all areas of midwifery, particularly low and high-risk antenatal care.
  • Experience in providing clinical advice over the telephone.
  • Experience of managing a ward area.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in guideline development and implementation
  • Able to demonstrate achievement in service improvement.
  • Experience of audit.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Effective and enhanced internet and IT skills and good understanding of various IT software.
  • Demonstrates competence in dealing with obstetric emergencies in hospital and community setting, both patient facing and via directed guidance over the telephone.
  • Maintains confidentiality and data protection needs
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to listen and respond appropriately to people, especially over the telephone.
  • Demonstrates strong clinical leadership and influencing skills
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of clinical governance processes/ risk management.
