Job overview

Working across both Epsom and St Helier hospital sites, this is a full time 37.5 hours position and is an exciting opportunity to become an integral part of an expanding and successful team.

 

You would be working closely with clinical audiologists providing support for audiology services. The work is varied offering an opportunity to combine admin duties with provision of a clinical service and direct patient contact.

The post holder will also support the provision of our domiciliary service.

 No previous experience is necessary as training will be offered; however you should be an excellent communicator with the ability to use your own initiative and be able to demonstrate good organisational skills. A driving licence is desirable.

Main duties of the job

The role of the assistant practitioner is to support and complement the qualified clinical audiologists in providing our hearing aid and Audiology services.

A mixture of clinical and administrative responsibilities, give the post holder opportunities to learn new skills and have a direct effect on the patient experience

 

The post holder will assist the provision of the highest quality patient care through dedicated clinical and clerical support to professional audiology staff and continuous improvement of the service.

 

Based in a specialty clinical team, the post holder will support all clerical duties including reception cover  and basic clinical issues relating to patients’ pathway of care.

 

The post holder will deliver a professional patient focused service that supports clinical staff in the provision of efficient integrated pathways that enable the best use of resources and ensure timely and appropriate interventions  

 

The post holder will ensure high levels of patient care by assisting the Audiologists and by being an accessible, customer focused and knowledgeable point of contact.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Duties

Clinical

           Provide a Hearing aid repair service to both adult and paediatric service users under the supervision of qualified clinical Audiologists.

 

The post holder will :

  • Be able to deliver a professional service 
  • Be responsible for running walk in re tube clinics, when they occur
  • Be responsible for running basic repair clinics
  • Perform routine otoscopy as require
  • Take aural impressions for the provision of earmoulds /swim plugs
  • Respond to telephone calls, emails and in person to queries regarding hearing device
  • Check hearing devices to assess function and re-programme or replace as necessary
  • Provide a postal replacement service for batteries replacement aids ear moulds etc
  • Assist with instruction for use for all hearing aids and accessories including basic maintenance and trouble shooting
  • Provide these services for outpatients and in patients as required
  • Support the Audiologists to deliver the audiology domiciliary service and outreach programmes
  • Make onward referral as appropriate.
  • Visit wards to provide personal communicators and assess needs of in-patients with potential hearing loss .

 

Technical

The post holder will:

·           Be involved with implementation of nurses’ tool kit within the trust

·           Liaise with outside voluntary agencies to provide support and training.

·           Perform basic and routine calibration of test equipment

·           Prepare rooms for use by clinical audiologists

 

 

Administrative

The post holder will

·           Work as part of a multi-disciplinary clinical team maintaining efficient systems and processes. This includes maintaining accurate computerised and manual records, ensuring that all patient records are kept up to date with any details relevant to the patient’s attendance and/or aids

·           Liaise with clinical staff to ensure that specialist equipment is available, where required.

·           Contribute to quality and cost improvement initiatives to improve services.

·           Schedule patients in accordance with outpatient waiting time targets and ensure that attendance information is accurately recorded on all appropriate databases, including, but not limited to the Trust patient management systems and Audit Base.

·           Process stock orders including ordering and receipting goods using Logistics online and SBS

·           Participate in stock control

·           Be responsible for carrying out annual stock take in accordance with Trust procedures

·           Co-ordinate the repair and calibration of all equipment with the equipment lead

·           Contact patients via the appropriate media to inform of appointments and repair collection

·           Provide reception cover

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good general education with GCSE or equivalent in English at grade C or above
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a full range of IT/Patient administration systems
  • Experience of customer care
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of patient administration work in a healthcare setting
