Job overview

  • To provide support to the service specific lead along with both operational and financial management to all Catering Services provision under the scope of this role including but not exclusively Patient Catering, Retail Catering, Staff and Visitor Catering, Hospitality, Vending Services
  • To support the Head of Catering Services to ensure a safe, efficient and customer focused Retail Catering, Staff and Visitor Catering, Hospitality.
  • To support the management of the Catering Services ensuring that they meet or exceed service standards within agreed resources
  • To lead in the managing the Subway Franchise while maximising profit ensuring they meet or exceed customer satisfaction
  • To support in the delivery of innovative projects within Retail, Staff and Visitor catering provision to enhance the patient, customer and staff experience
  • Participate in the effective recruitment, induction, management development and deployment within identified services at the direction of the Head of Catering Services.
  • To ensure on behalf of the Trust, and for partner organisations holding Service Level Agreements, that contracts for the delivery of Vending services provide best value and meet the requirements of patient, staff and visitor.

 

 

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure the Catering Services are operationally managed in line with best practice and national guidance
  • To support in the formulation of the  Trust’s Food & Drinks Strategy every 3-4 years.
  • To support the implementation of the blueprint for the delivery of better hospital food once published.
  • To support the safe transport and delivery of hospitality bookings throughout the Trust
  • To support the management of the out of hours on call service provision to comply with local processes and Major Incident protocols at all times
  • To assess and monitor performance standards, key performance indicators and systems of regular measurement for all services under the scope of this role.
  • To support the implementation, development and maintenance of Service Level Agreements with all service users ensuring staff and equipment are available
  • Responsible for the maintenance of asset registers and required PPM to ensure equipment availability and safety
  • To take the operational lead for a large range of functions including staffing, day-to-day management of the department, resolution of issues and the development and implementation of operational policies and procedures within the department.
  • To provide a wide range of statistical data for service quality monitoring
  • To support the delivery of services within budget, and actively support plans to ensure that the Facilities Department meets financial targets.
  • Contribute to new and existing business cases for the annual revenue and capital bidding process with the support of the Head of Catering 
  • Responsible for the requisition of materials, equipment, and certify invoices and receipts in accordance with Trust SFIs within the scope of this role
  • Hold suitable level on the scheme of delegation and provide account reports and expenditure/ income forecasts.
  • Participate in the annual cycle of strategic planning and the setting and monitoring of service and collaborative commitments for Facilities.
  • To liaise with the infection control team and other key clinical staff
  • To support the management of both formal and informal complaints pertaining to services provided within the remit of Facilities.
  • To act as an Investigating Officer in respect of both internal / external investigations as directed by the Head of Catering
  • To actively and regularly participate in a variety of mechanisms, including user groups and Patient & Public Involvement representatives, to seek and encourage feedback from service users to enable continuous improvement.
  • Plan, progress, implement and evaluate projects as requested in conjunction with the Head of Site Services
  • To participate in PLACE in regards to delivery, education and compliance of operational staff
  • Provide effective leadership and management to a team of staff, which promotes high performance standards both individually, and as a team, in the achievement of the Trust’s objectives and priorities.
  • Understand the Trust’s key priorities and those for Facilities Services and ensure processes to support this are in place
  • Ensure management of staff is consistent with the Trust's HR Policies to the achievement of equality, equity and optimum performance.
  • Appraisals of staff directly managed are undertaken and that the appraisal process is maintained throughout the team.
  • Manage absence, sickness, and conduct for direct reports. Liaise with Human Resources staff as necessary and make recommendations for disciplinary actions to the Head of Catering
  • To actively seek opportunities to develop self and others.
  • Ensure compliance for Continuing Professional Development by attending appropriate seminars, courses, websites and researching relevant literature.
  • To participate in team working with Facilities and to inspire, respect, stimulate, help, support, motivate, encourage, appraise and praise colleagues in order that the Facilities Department delivers on its commitments.
  • To monitor corporate risks to ensure continuity of critical services; taking into account resilience planning issues and corporate strategy.
  • To support the Head of Site Services to implement changes to statutory and regulatory requirements as required within the scope of this role and to disseminate these changes to others within the Trust, in conjunction with the non-clinical Risk Advisors and Senior Leadership Team where necessary
  • To undertake any other tasks as directed by the Head of Catering and as appropriate to the grade.
  • To directly line manage operational service leads

NHS Patient Catering Experience

Essential criteria
  • In depth experience in patient dining and special diets
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of menu planning, costings and dietetic understanding

Professional Qualification

Essential criteria
  • HNC in Hotel Catering and Institutional Management or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • FDQ (Food and Drink Qualification) Auditing Skills Course

Operational Management

Essential criteria
  • Significant operational management either in an NHS or Private Sector environment, considerable experience of management or supervisory level
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of monitoring and managing contracts to achieve levels and quality of service in line with customer requirements

Catering Retail Experience

Essential criteria
  • Management of Minimum 2 Retail Outlets
Desirable criteria
  • Management of more than 2 Retail Outlets

Food Safety Compliance

Essential criteria
  • Level 3 Certificate in Food Safety
Desirable criteria
  • Level 2 Award in Identifying and Controlling Food Allergy Risks

Strategic Staff Management
