Job overview
Applications are invited for the 12 month fixed term 6.5 PA post of Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in cornea and ocular surface disease. The successful applicant will lead the development of the keratoconus service and support the ocular surface and acute eye services. The post is offered for 12 months in the first instance, pending formal substantive appointment.
There is currently no oncall commitment for the fixed term position.
The post is based at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, which is a large Trust serving South West London and Surrey and part of the St George's, Epsom and St Helier Hospital Group (GESH) . The Corneal and Ocular surface service provides clinics at St Helier hospital, and Epsom General hospital. The Acute Eye service is based at the St Helier site. Epsom and St Helier Trust is part of the South West London Ophthalmology Network, with its out of hours and on-call service based at St George’s Hospital in Tooting.
The successful applicant will join a team of 13 Consultants with dedicated subspecialty interests.

Main duties of the job
This post is for a 6.5 PA fixed term Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in cornea and ocular surface disease. The successful applicant will lead the development of the keratoconus service and support the ocular surface and acute eye services.
The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients attending cornea and ocular surface disease clinics and the Acute Eye Service.
The clinical team is supported by specialist nurses, orthoptists, optometrists, HCAs, technicians and a dedicated administrative team.

The successful applicant will lead the development of the keratoconus service and support the ocular surface and acute eye services.
The trust has two dedicated ophthalmology outpatient units and the post holder will be required to work across both sites.
Person specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
- Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST or equivalent
- Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. FRCOphth or CCST equivalent
- Fellowship training in Cornea
- High standard of clinical skill and expertise in Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease management management
Desirable criteria
- MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of Cornea and Ocular surface disease experience at high level
- Experience of working in a busy Acute Eye Casualty Service
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of peer reviewed publications
Management & Admin Experience
Essential criteria
- Audit/Research
- Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST
- Supervision of post graduate trainees
- Personal time management skills
- Clinical Governance
- Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists
Desirable criteria
- Familiarity within issues of service organisation and development
Teaching Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
