Job overview
We have a new anaesthesia fellowships at Ashford and St Peter's, which are ideally suited to candidates looking to develop their sub-specialty interests and enhance their CVs for ST4 or consultant applications.
Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years experience in anaesthesia and critical care, and be able to cover on calls in theatres, labour ward and intensive care with distant supervision.
These posts are available from August 2025 and will be for 6-12 months duration depending on applicants preference.
Main duties of the job
Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the peri-operative care of patients in their sub-specialty interest areas. Work will be a mix of training lists and solo lists with more distant supervision, dependent on levels of skill and experience. In addition to theatre lists, fellows will contribute to service delivery and governance by partaking in projects, such as service development and quality improvement projects. There will also be opportunities to organise and deliver teaching sessions to the department and to the wider multi-disciplinary team.
Fellows will provide on call cover on a 1 in 8 rota covering either theatres, obstetrics or intensive care, with supervision from the consultant on call.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
All fellows will be expected to deliver peri-operative care in their sub-specialty area with consultant supervision
- Carry out pre-operative assessment including working in high risk clinics and presenting in MDT meetings.
- Work on projects to improve the service, such as service development projects and quality improvement
- Deliver teaching to the department in sub-specialty area - departmental meetings and trainee teaching
- Provide on call cover with distant supervision in either theatres, obstetrics or intensive care on a 1 in 8 basis
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team
- Deliver high standards of patient focussed care
- Work to the Trust's objectives and values
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualifications in anaesthesia e.g. FRCA
Experience
Essential criteria
- 2 years experience in anaesthesia and critical care
- Experience working with distant supervision in theatres, labour ward and intensive care
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Evidence of CPD activities related to anaesthesia
Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of Initial Assessment of Competencies (IAC) and Initial Assessment of Competencies in Obsteric Anaesthesia (IACOA)
- Able to anaesthetise ASA 1 and 2 patients independently for emergency surgery with distant supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work constructively in a multi-disciplinary team
- Comepetent in the use of IT/computer systems
