We have an exciting opportunity to join our team of dedicated consultants working in a friendly, flexible, and cohesive group. We are enthusiastic, welcoming and proactive in supporting special interests

We offer clinics in general and paediatric dermatology, a joint paediatric allergy-dermatology clinic, a pregnancy dermatoses clinic, patch testing clinics, biologics and systemics clinics, two week rule clinics, skin lesion clinics, complex cases clinics (attended by all consultants), minor operative lists, as well as dermatopathology meetings.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will:

  • Provide high‑quality Consultant‑level clinical care in Dermatology, including assessment, diagnosis, investigation and management of patients across outpatient, procedural, and multidisciplinary settings.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider Dermatology team to deliver a safe, efficient and patient‑focused service.
  • Participate in MDT meetings, clinics, ward referrals and rapid assessment pathways.
  • Share responsibility for delivering clinical leadership, improving patient experience, and supporting high standards of care across the department.
  • Support and supervise junior medical staff, GPwERs, nursing colleagues and allied health professionals, contributing to teaching, training and educational activities.
  • Engage in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research activities.
  • Contribute to service development, including the ongoing growth of digital innovation, AI‑enabled pathways and collaborative work with Primary Care and regional specialist teams.
  • Undertake Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), including appraisal, job planning, teaching, audit, clinical management, and participation in departmental and Trust‑wide meetings.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Deliver Consultant‑level Dermatology services to a high professional standard, in accordance with Trust policies and clinical governance frameworks.
  • Provide direct clinical care across outpatient clinics, Minor Ops lists, mole‑mapping services, MDTs and ward referral activity.
  • Contribute to rapid triage and assessment pathways to ensure timely investigation and decision‑making.
  • Maintain responsibility for the ongoing care of patients under your charge, ensuring timely, safe and effective handovers.
  • Offer prompt specialist opinions for colleagues in other specialties when required.

Teamwork, Leadership and Service Delivery

  • Work closely with the department’s Consultants, Specialty Doctors, GPwERs, nurses, management teams and clinical office staff to deliver a cohesive, well‑led Dermatology service.
  • Provide clinical leadership that supports improved patient experience, service efficiency and high‑quality care.
  • Participate in senior clinical cover arrangements across the department, ensuring equity and safe service delivery.

Teaching, Training and Education

  • Provide teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate learners, medical and non‑medical staff, and supervise junior doctors.
  • Support the department’s commitment to continuous learning, ensuring your teaching activity aligns with GMC requirements and Trust standards.
  • Contribute to educational sessions, CPD, and the development of training programmes.

Research, Audits and Quality Improvement

  • Participate in research, including ongoing collaborative work in Dermatology and AI‑enabled care pathways.
  • Take part in clinical audit, ensuring effective documentation, outcomes monitoring and shared learning.
  • Lead or support service development and quality improvement initiatives aligned with departmental goals.

Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)

SPAs will typically include:

  • Audit, research and clinical governance
  • Teaching and training preparation
  • Appraisal, job planning and rota contribution
  • Attendance at clinical and departmental meetings
  • Service development and major incident planning

The exact SPA allocation will be agreed on appointment and reviewed annually.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (or CCT) by the time of taking up the post or be accredited for inclusion on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register.
  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council.
