Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Dietetic team at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a full-time permanent Band 6 Medical Dietitian.  The successful candidate will be involved in delivering specialist inpatient and outpatient services to our medical patients.

Main duties of the job

This post involves managing an inpatient caseload on the medical wards as well as a regular specialist outpatient clinic.  The successful candidate will work closely with MDT colleagues including consultants and specialist nurses and within a dynamic team of 5 medical dietitians and a support worker.  Clinical areas covered include: CAU, short and long stay medical wards including; respiratory, oncology, palliative care, cardiac, elderly care and complex oral and enteral nutrition support. 

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the post holder will have the opportunity to develop supervision skills through supporting other staff and students. They will also be encouraged to actively contribute to audits, as well as to develop and implement innovative approaches to service delivery.

Excellent team working, communication and prioritisation skills are essential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will:

  • As part of the Ashford and St Peter’s Dietetic Department, provide a high quality nutrition and dietetic service to patients, carers and staff at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals.
  • As a practitioner with a high degree of autonomy, take responsibility for managing and providing the majority of the services required and planning this effectively
  • To support supervision of staff as required
  • To take an active role within the general functioning of the Dietetic Department, including contributing to student training.  
  • To communicate and collaborate with team members, other HCPs and partner organisations to support service improvements

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 4 year Degree in Dietetics (or equivalent qualification)
  • Current registration with HCPC
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of British Dietetic Association
  • Practice educator/ Student supervisory skills course
  • Post registration course in Nutrition Support

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience and training of clinical Dietetics in an NHS setting
  • Experience in enteral and oral nutrition support practises
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience delivering and/or developing training and education to healthcare professionals
  • Experience of delivering outpatient clinics
  • Working as part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering student training
  • Experience of conducting audit or service evaluation
  • Experience of initiating and managing patients on home enteral feeds

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of clinical dietetics and its practical application in an acute NHS Trust
  • Able to demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of national clinical and professional policies, guidelines and procedures, e.g. NICE/BDA/HCPC Code of Conduct.
  • Knowledge of nutritional support including enteral and oral nutrition support
