We are excited to offer an opportunity for an engaged, forward-thinking, and proactive doctor to join our high-energy, diverse team in the Emergency Department. We are looking for someone who can bring their own unique skills and perspectives to further enhance our dynamic service.

Our Emergency Department is the largest and busiest in Surrey, operating 24 hours a day and treating over 110,000 patients annually.

In this role you will work ,under the supervision of our experienced Emergency Medicine Consultant team, while also supporting our Middle Grade and Foundation Year 2 trainees in their development.

We warmly welcome informal visits to the department, giving you the chance to meet the team and experience first-hand how we deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

1. To be responsible for the initial assessment and care of the patients under the supervision of the Emergency Physician in Charge (EPIC).

2. To support the Emergency Physician in Charge at night with the ability to manage resources appropriately to ensure patient safety and escalate to Consultant on Call if required.  

3. To provide timely and appropriate guidance to the junior Emergency Department medical staff.

4. To support nursing and other clinical colleagues in the delivery of high quality emergency care.

5. To assist in developing and implementing the clinical protocols of care for all conditions / presentations.

6. To participate in the educational and research activities of the Emergency Department at St. Peter’s Hospital.

7. To support the delivery of key performance objectives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide initial assessment, treatment, and management of Emergency Department patients.

  • Lead night shifts, managing resources to ensure patient safety and escalating appropriately to Consultant on Call.

  • Independently review and manage both straightforward and complex cases with minimal supervision.

  • Supervise and support the clinical work and training of junior doctors, including Tier 2/3 staff, and contribute to multidisciplinary team development.

  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure effective communication with GPs and Speciality Teams. 

  • Work within Trust protocols, policies, and Clinical Governance frameworks, participating actively in audit and quality improvement projects.

  • Rotate across key ED areas, including Shift Leader, Rapid Assessment and Treatment, Ambulatory Majors, Non-ambulatory Majors and Paediatrics.

  • Practice according to GMC standards and demonstrate ongoing commitment to professional development and evidence-based practice.

  • Engage in departmental and Trust meetings, educational activities, and audits, with protected time allocated for supporting professional activities.

  • Participate in a self-rostering system and collaborate with colleagues to ensure internal cover for leave, with flexibility as needed.

Emergency Department operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week; therefore successful candidates need to be able to work a variety of shifts, including days, lates, twilights and nights.

  • Experience leading a department

  • 2 years or more in Emergency Medicine in NHS or similar health care setting post foundation years /internship

Knowledge

  • Clinical governance
  • Understanding of audit and research methodologies, resource management, clinical risk and quality
Desirable criteria
  • NHS Constitution and relevant local and national standards relating to the speciality

Skills

  • Able to communicate effectively to ensure high standards of care, treatment, service or support as appropriate to your role
