Job overview

Are you an experienced psychiatrist looking for a rewarding clinical leadership role? We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our friendly Liaison Psychiatry Team at Epsom General Hospital.

This is a vital service supporting people aged 16 and over who come to hospital with urgent or complex mental health needs. You’ll be part of a welcoming and skilled team, providing specialist assessments, advice, and care plans for people receiving treatment on the wards or in A&E.

You will lead on the care of working-age adults (WAA) and work alongside a dedicated Older Adults (OA) consultant. Referrals come from across the hospital, and the team works closely with physical health staff to ensure safe, compassionate, and joined-up care. You’ll have protected time for supervision, development, quality improvement, and teaching.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant will be expected to support the existing staff in assessing, diagnosing & managing referrals for working-age adults presenting with mental health problems in Epsom General Hospital, and to provide medical expertise & support to EGH staff involved in looking after patients with functional & organic mental health problems presenting in the acute hospital.

In addition, the Consultant will supervise the clinical caseload of the team members and the work of any trainee doctors who may be attached to the service. The role will also  support the existing liaison team in deciding the most appropriate intervention for patients referred to the service.  This will include facilitating discharge planning & timely communication with Primary Care, CMHRSs or Inpatient Services. 

The clinical work will involve the assessment & psychiatric treatment of patients directly or through the supervision of other team members.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act(or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent
  • MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice.
  • Knowledge of NHS strategic vision in the Next Stage Review (High-Quality Care for All)
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Experience working with various patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity across different care settings, including community, inpatient, and Specialty teams.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric provision
Desirable criteria
  • Published audit or research projects
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
  • Experience in management
  • Peer review or research publications

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
Desirable criteria
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within three months of appointment

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take a clinical leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high- quality care.
  • Skills and sensitivity in negotiating with patients, relatives, and other professionals where opinions differ.
  • A high-level ability to effectively communicate complex and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers, and a wide range of lay and professional people within and outside the NHS at both written and oral levels.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
