Job overview

Responsible for co-ordinating the early pregnancy and recurrent miscarriage service across both St Helier and Epsom Hospital

Focus on providing high quality clinical care to pregnant and non-pregnant women who experience complications relating to recurrent miscarriage and complications in early pregnancy.

Manage the service and line manages the team of Band 6 midwives and maternity

Clinically assess women with early pregnancy complications according to hospital guidelines, plan and implement management/refer to the obstetric consultant specialists as appropriate.

Work closely with the obstetric and sonography team in diagnosing and advising on the management of women with concerns in early pregnancy.

Ensure women and their partners are sensitively offered appropriate information, support and counselling in respect of early pregnancy complications including recurrent miscarriage, threatened miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, pregnancy of unknown location, pain, anxiety and hyperemesis.

 

Main duties of the job

CLINICAL PRACTICE

Take responsibility for own personal development and adhere to the NMC standards for Midwifery Practice.

Undertake venepuncture, order diagnostic blood tests, interpret results and initiate appropriate interventions.

Ensure that nursing care is patient focused and that patient dignity and privacy are maintained at all times.

Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and colleagues and that equal opportunities are practiced.

Ensure women are prioritised according to need and there is effective patient flow throughout the department.

Whenever possible the post holder will attempt to resolve all complaints

Emotional support for the staff to deal with complex patients and families.

Oversee the close follow-up of women with pregnancy of unknown location, ectopic pregnancy and missed miscarriage in consultation with the lead consultant

Develop and maintain skills in relation to miscarriage and early pregnancy by participation and attendance at relevant educational events.

Essential and Desirable

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse Part 1 adult /Registered Midwife
  • Recognised ultrasound scanning qualifications in early pregnancy
  • Holds a degree in relevant health care subject
  • Mentorship certificate or Practice assessor certificate
  • Experience in Early pregnancy scanning
  • Proven management and leadership experience
  • Proven ability of problem solving and conflict resolution Ability to work under pressure to achieve service objectives. Knowledge and understanding of professional and ethical issues
  • Experience of managing a budget
Desirable criteria
  • • Accredited PG certificate in Early pregnancy and gynaecology ultrasound scanning
  • • Counselling course or willingness to undertake
  • • Consultation skills

  • Experience of undertaking appraisals and or recognizing training/developmental needs of the staff Input and review of local policies
