Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a fixed term Locum Consultant to join our Older People’s Medicine department to cover maternity leave, provisionally from 1st March 2026 until 31st October.  The post is to cover a general geriatric ward with 22 patients and to contribute to frailty sessions. 

Main duties of the job

We expect daily consultant presence on the acute wards with daily MDT board rounds and review of new admissions and unwell patients and twice weekly ward rounds.  We support a 7-day acute frailty service and frailty virtual ward as well as weekly ward rounds of our community inpatients.

We would welcome any applicants with movement disorder experience. There is no requirement to contribute to the GIM rota and no on-call responsibility.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Teaching and development of medical students and trainees is an integral part of the role as well as participation in research and audit activities in the department.  Duties may also include teaching, lectures or workshops for other departments, nurses, GPs and others.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCP (UK)
  • CCT in Geriatric medicine and GIM (or within 6 months of achieving at the time of application
Desirable criteria
  • MD/PhD
  • Other post-graduate degree
  • CCT in another medical speciality

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Delivery of inpatient and outpatient geriatric medicine
  • Involvement in unselected medical take
  • Involvement in the design of services/pathways.
  • Ability to make decisions at the level of a Consultant
Desirable criteria
  • N/A

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to function as a specialty Consultant and lead a team of junior trainees
  • Ability to organise and manage a clinical service
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Evidence of good spoken and written English
  • Experience of teaching medical students and junior trainees
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership of professional bodies or committees
  • Evidence of written communication in publications
  • Post graduate qualifications in medical education
