Job overview

Our ophthalmology department encompasses the Eye Treatment Centre at Frimley Park Hospital, the Mobile Macular Unit (MMU) which moves weekly between Basingstoke, Farnborough, Aldershot and Camberley, Aldershot Centre for Health, Farnham Hospital and Heatherwood outpatients. The post holder will rotate between all clinical areas within this very busy fast paced speciality. Ophthalmic Imaging is a specialised form of Medical Photography. This imaging specialism is dedicated to the recording and treatment of many disorders of the eye, both common and rare.

 Ophthalmic Imaging plays a critical role in supporting the main aim of Frimley Park Hospital, to be the Centre of Excellence in Ophthalmic care.

Our dedicated team of skilled Ophthalmic Vision  practitioners hold a broad range of expertise in providing a comprehensive imaging service.

Main duties of the job

  • Support registered practitioners in providing safe and effective care to ophthalmic patients.
  • To act in accordance with policies and nursing procedures as per Trust policy.
  • To ensure confidentiality of patient records and high standards of documentation under the direct supervision of the registered practitioners.
  • To escalate as appropriate any untoward incidents, complaints and unit issues.
  • To attend / complete all mandatory training.
  • To promote good working relationships and to support the senior ophthalmic team to achieve high morale within the team.
  • To use all resources efficiently and effectively maintaining an awareness of budgetary implications.
  • To carry out all administrative and ophthalmic duties as delegated by the senior ophthalmic team.
  • Be competent within their scope of practice and continue to develop through the acquisition of further skills, knowledge and competencies determined by the individual clinical area.
  • Demonstrate competence in generic and specialist skills following the completion of the appropriate training and education and within twelve months from commencement in role.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working in Ophthalmology, outpatients’ department or day surgery unit
  • Experience of working in a team, undertaking duties as requested

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to manage time effectively and prioritise tasks
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of clinical applications.
  • Competent in venepuncture, cannulation and ECGs
  • Competency in Ophthalmic Scans such as Optos & Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and/or Humphrey Visual fields etc

Qualifications / Education

Essential criteria
  • Education / Qualifications GC/GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English (Grade C or above) Willingness to complete level 2 healthcare apprenticeship
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 or 4 in health and social care or working towards this
