Apprentice - Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician

Band 4 (Annex 21)

Job overview

Pharmacy is a continually evolving and fast-paced environment that blends professional expertise with advanced technology to deliver outstanding care for our patients.

The Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship offers an excellent opportunity to gain fully funded training and nationally recognised qualifications while earning a salary in a rewarding and supportive role. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will be eligible to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a qualified Pharmacy Technician.

If you have a keen interest in science, healthcare, and IT, and you’re passionate about making a difference in people’s lives, this could be the ideal career path for you.

This role involves intensive training and requires a high level of motivation, commitment, and personal organisation. You will need to dedicate approximately 10–15 hours per week to home study alongside your working hours. Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and time management are essential, as is the ability to work to deadlines and prioritise your workload effectively.

The post may involve working evenings, weekends, and bank holidays as part of the service requirements.

All applicants must meet the apprenticeship eligibility criteria outlined in the person specification, including holding four GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4–9 / A–C*, specifically in English Language, Mathematics, and Science. Please ensure these qualifications and grades are clearly listed on your application form, as applicants who do not meet the full criteria will not be shortlisted.

Please note: Applicants who already hold a Level 3 (or higher) Pharmacy qualification are not eligible for apprenticeship funding.

Main duties of the job

Supervised duties will include:

  • Labelling, dispensing and accuracy checking a variety of prescriptions using our electronic prescribing system.
  • Learning how different medicines work and what they are used to treat.
  • Ordering, receiving and maintaining pharmaceutical stock.
  • Providing excellent customer care and maintaining confidentiality while dealing with patients, staff and the public.
  • Counselling patients on how to use their medicines safely.
  • Working directly with patients on wards and in clinics to ensure safe medicines use both while in hospital and on discharge.
