Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic individual to join our fast-paced GI Surgery Team. We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills and a calm and methodical approach to provide administrative and secretarial support within the consultant team.
The role will include a full range of medical secretarial duties; assisting consultants and the wider team. You will be required to manage your own workload while still being a team player, demonstrate efficient organisation and oversee the smooth effective operation of the office.
Main duties of the job
To provide a full range of medical secretarial & personal assistant service to your consultants and their team, including full organisational support.
To cover administrative and secretarial responsibilities for the Maxillofacial Department.
To provide a full range of medical secretarial assistance to consultants and their team. Manage own workload, demonstrate efficient organisation and oversee the smooth effective operation of the office. To work autonomously within a team, providing full organisational support to the consultant’s practice and their team. To ensure procedures and working practices are in place so that the specialty and Trust can deliver a service that meets the standards and targets that have been set. To provide a considerate, patient focused service in all dealings with patients and with staff around the hospital and throughout the whole system.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Good general standard of education to GCSE level or equivalent including English
- RSA II or equivalent in word processing/audio typing RSA III, Medical secretarial qualification (BSMS Certificate) or equivalent.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Working knowledge of a range of software packages e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
- Experience of working in busy environment.
- Experience of working with the general public effectively.
- Experience of undertaking diary management
- Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology
- Broad knowledge of medical terminology.
- Detailed knowledge of patient pathways and advanced medical terminology in own area of work.
- Knowledge of NHS priorities and understanding of the guidelines and targets in own area of work.
- Experience of mentoring, training or supervising others.
- Awareness and understanding of NHS issues.
- Good spelling and grammar.
Desirable criteria
- Working knowledge of NHS systems
- Experience of planning and booking appointments
- Experience in an acute hospital environment as a medical secretary.
