Employer heading
Clinical Research Fellowship in Gynaecological Oncology
ST5+
Job overview
Part-time Clinical Research Fellowship in Gynaecological Oncology.
Starting on October 2026 initially for one year and likely extendable.
Applications are invited for one part-time clinical research posts (Clinical Fellow ST6 equivalent) in Gynaecological Oncology at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust.
Royal Surrey Foundation Trust is an internationally renowned training centre for minimal access surgery and is the largest centre for robotic surgery in the UK. The Gynaecological oncology team has pioneered the use of robotics for the management of endometrial, cervical and ovarian cancers in the UK and has an excellent reputation for education & training, data analysis & research. The centre is recognised for subspecialty training by the RCOG and ESGO.
The research component of the posts will be undertaken between the Royal Surrey and Brunel University. The clinical work at the Royal Surrey will be at ST6 level, with each fellow spending two full days of clinical work per week at the hospital, including ward and clinic work as well as regular theatre sessions. This will include robotic surgery and prior training and experience as a robotic surgical first assistance would be highly desirable.
For further information please contact Nicky Millar, Specialty Manager [email protected], or contact Professor Jay Chatterjee directly ([email protected]).
Main duties of the job
This fixed-term post, initially for one year and likely extendable following successful review, is aimed at a career hospital doctor pursuing a career in Gynaecological oncology. This is not recognized as a training post and so UK O&G trainees would require OOPE or OOPR to be taken.
The department performs approximately 450 cancer operations per annum, of which approximately 180 are for ovarian cancer. The clinical workload is approximately half robotic and half open cancer surgery. Small numbers of complex benign tertiary referrals are also undertaken and risk-reducing surgery, mainly arising from the Gene Carrier Clinic which Mr. Tailor undertakes together with colleagues form clinical genetics and breast surgery. Close working relations are expected with the two other clinical fellows, four CNSs and secretarial and administrative team. The Consultants are readily available for support and advice and take part in a daily on call rota. The department embraces clinical research, audit, and service improvement initiatives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
A daily ward round of all patients is expected with the other fellows and CNS and data entry into the gynae-oncology database which is used to produce all clinical audit and governance data, and clinical documentation within the department. The hospital also uses the CERNER electronic record system, which needs to be used to record all ward and clinic episodes and for investigation requests. The fellows are responsible for ensuring with the two surgical CNSs that the patients scheduled for surgery are reviewed in the pre-operative assessment clinic and any problems arising are acted upon in a timely manner, to minimize peri-operative risk to patients, and prevent any delays occurring. The Fellows are also responsible for booking ICU beds for major cases.
