At present Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services is a single NHS Pathology directorate serving Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital, Frimley Health (Frimley Park Hospital and Heatherwood and Wrexham Park Hospital), Royal Surrey Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts and SASH including St Luke’s Cancer Centre and Royal Berkshire Hospital.As a part of pathology service reconfiguration and the formation of Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS), the Histology laboratory has been centralised at Royal Surrey Hospital for the Surrey sites.
Applications are invited for LAS post to join a team of 9 consultant Histopathologists, MTI and six deanery trainee registrars supporting clinical services.The post holder must be medically qualified with registration with the General Medical Council (GMC). Practitioners unable for personal reasons to work full time are welcome to apply for this post. This is a fixed term vacancy covering the period from 04/02/26 till 04/08/26

Main duties of the job
This post is for Trust Doctor in Histopathology based at and employed by the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford as part of Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services with Frimley Park Hospital/ Wexham Park Hospital, Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital, East Surrey Hospital and Royal Berkshire Hospital.
Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post: if such a person is appointed modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with the Educational Supervisor, SpRs colleagues, Lead Histopathologist and Consultants
The post holder must be medically qualified and should hold GMC registration. Prior experience in cellular pathology is essential.
The histology laboratory is based on the Royal Surrey Hospital site.
The population of the area served by the 3 Trusts is approximately 1,200,000.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder with the existing Consultants, SpRs and MTIs will provide a histology service to Health Authority Commissioners, GPs and clinicians at the hospitals as well as to the Jarvis Breast Screening Centre. Duties will include mainly cutting up and reporting surgical specimens but also include participation in weekly and/or monthly meetings, with the clinicians in the form of clinicopathological and MDT meetings to discuss patient management
IT and departmental secretarial support along with shared accommodation with existing SpRs and microscope will be provided. The department is well equipped with automated rapid processors and automated immunostainers. The range of immunochemistry is wide and any additional new antibodies are usually considered favourably.

- Evidence of some previous registrar/specialist training in cellular pathology (or equivalent).
- Participation in clinical audit and attendance at appropriate courses.
