Locum Consultant Intensive Care

Locum Consultant

Job overview

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant post in Intensive Care Medicine based at the Royal Surrey Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Trust is seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual to bring knowledge and skills that will further enhance the care of critically ill patients in the hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to strengthen and develop the critical care service within a growing and dynamic department. In 2014 the Intensive Care underwent a new build extension of 12 state of the art bed spaces and associated patient and staff facilities, bringing the physical capacity of the unit to a total of 28 beds.  The Anaesthetic department has become well known for using Enhanced Recovery and Goal Directed Therapy for elective major surgery and emergency cases. The hospital attracts tertiary referrals for hepatobiliary, oesophagogastric, gynae-oncology and robotic urological surgery. In particular, specialist expertise has been developed in the management of severe acute pancreatitis, hepatic failure in both surgical and medical patients and perforated oesophagus.

We have close links with the anaesthetic department. There is particular expertise in the perioperative management of high-risk patients within the department and enhanced recovery pathways are embedded within clinical practice. As well as specialist tertiary cancer surgery the department also supports more routine surgical work across a range of specialities.

Main duties of the job

Our aim is to provide excellent Consultant led care for our critically ill patients in all areas of the hospital. The Trust is committed to continued improvement and development in the acute services, ensuring rapid and equitable access to the right service at the right time. As such, there is significant investment in Urgent Care currently underway within the hospital.

Research activity is well established with patients enrolled into large multi-centre trials as well as local investigator-led trials. Research is conducted through the Surrey Perioperative Anaesthesia Critical care collaborative Research Group (SPACeR). http://www.spacer.org.uk/. Several clinicians hold honorary lecturer positions at the University and one visiting Professor.  There are currently four research fellows based in anaesthesia and three in ICU, and two research nurses are in post.

  • To provide ICU expertise in the management of treatment and critically ill patients.
  • To be part of the MDT and clinical team
  • To play a full part in the out of hours on-call service for ICU
  • To fully participate in the clinical, and where appropriate educational supervision of trainees and other staff.
