We are excited to offer a Band 5 (Annex 21) Therapeutic Radiography Apprenticeship at the Royal Surrey Foundation Trust. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for a new challenge or a career change within the Trust while earning as you learn.
The three year BSc Radiotherapy Apprenticeship is delivered through a mix of online, work based and face to face learning, with 2–3 days of teaching at Sheffield Hallam University and the remainder based in the Radiotherapy department at RSCH.
You’ll receive protected study time, hands on clinical experience, and support from an experienced multidisciplinary team, developing the skills needed to treat cancer patients using radiation.We’re looking for motivated, caring, and communicative individuals committed to delivering high quality patient care.
All tuition fees are fully funded through the apprenticeship levy.
Main duties of the job
This is a 3-year fixed-term apprenticeship post to train as a Therapeutic Radiographer.
You will study towards the Level 6 Therapeutic Radiography (Integrated Degree) with a commissioned Higher Education Institution, whilst working in a Radiotherapy Department Assistant role for the on-the-job element. You will participate in theoretical and practical off-the-job training, undertaking duties in all aspects of Radiotherapy in order to achieve the apprenticeship standard. You will be required to commit to selfdirected study and work towards completion of the BSc (Hons) degree in Therapeutic Radiography and any other mandatory qualifications required for registration with the HCPC as a qualified Therapeutic Radiographer, within the contract period.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Therapeutic Radiographer apprenticeship programme combines and integrates
work-based and traditional academic learning. You can expect to spend up to 80% of
your time on-the-job, in a productive role and at least 20% of your time learning off
the job.
Training will be completed through a combination of attending face-to-face and/or
virtual sessions delivered by the Higher Education Institution, where support will be
given to empower you to complete and pass the theoretical and academic
components and assessments. You will also complete a range of clinical placements,
observations and work-based assessments as required by the degree apprenticeship
programme. These aspects will be completed within the Royal Surrey NHS
Foundation Trust (RSFT), where registered professionals will support you. During
this time, you will gain clinical experience working across an audited practice learning
environment (placement setting) that will provide supervision and assessment, as set
by the HCPC Standards for Education and Training (2017).
Alongside this, you will be based as a paid employee, in a clinical area (known as the
host setting) where you will work as part of the Radiotherapy team in delivering a
high quality and effective service to patients.
With guidance from registered professionals, practice supervisors and practice
educators, the post holder will assist the therapy radiographers in the delivery of
quality and individualised care to patients undergoing radiotherapy and assist the
radiographers with the tasks required to ensure a good patient experience.
During the apprenticeship, you will develop the skills and knowledge to allow you to
work in today’s dynamic and changing healthcare environments. Through
assessment, intervention, critical reflection and the application of analytical skills,
they will demonstrate the Trust Values of Caring Together, Learning Together,
Excelling Together and Continuously Improving.
You will work as an autonomous practitioner within a team and be responsible and
accountable for your decisions and for reflecting on the effectiveness of your actions,
with the aim of continually improving the service you provide.
You will ensure that only those activities for which competence has been assessed
and achieved are undertaken without supervision and that recognition is given to the
impact and consequences of practising outside capability.
As funding for the training element of this post is drawn from the apprenticeship levy,
apprenticeship funding rules and eligibility criteria will apply to this post.

Essential criteria
- All applicants must have evidence of Education and Skills Funding Agency approved Level 2 English Language and maths qualifications e.g. GCSE A*/C (9-4), Functional Skills Level 2, UK ENIC Statement of Comparability for overseas qualifications
- Must possess one of the following: 1. 112 UCAS tariff points (e.g., 3 A Levels at grades BBC) 2. BTEC Level 3 extended diploma (before 2010 known as BTEC national diploma level 3) DMM in a health-related subject 3. Foundation degree/diploma (or similar), 120 credits 4. International Baccalaureate (26 points) 5. NVQ Level 3 plus one-year relevant work experience 6. Access to Higher Education course in Science, Health, Social Care or similar (60 credits, of which 45 credits will be at Level 3 including minimum 30 at distinction grade and 15 at merit grade) A
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable understanding of the role of a Therapeutic Radiographer within the Radiotherapy environment and within the context of the multi-disciplinary team
- An awareness of what the Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship Programme entails and the scope of practice of a Therapeutic Radiographer
- Understanding the importance of following procedures and working within guidelines and protocols
- Experience of successful teamwork

- Experience of working in a busy environment
- Previous experience of a healthcare setting or customer-orientated service
- Understanding and commitment to adhere to HCPC Professional Standards of Proficiency (HCPC, 2018)
- Knowledge of relevant national standards, e.g. Ionising Radiation(Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017, Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 and associated codes of practice
- Understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy/national guidance/CQC/ and appreciate the implications of this on engagement
- Evidence of recent, accredited and completed academic study
