Job overview

The Royal Surrey Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Screening Officer to join the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme’s Southern Hub team located on the Surrey Research Park in Guildford.

This team forms one of five hubs providing Bowel Cancer Screening in England; the Southern Hub serves a population of 16 million people across the South of England.

The Hub invites all 50-74 years olds within its population for bowel screening using a home test kit called FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test). The Hub provides a free phone helpline service, a modern laboratory and liaises with 18 Screening Centres in their provision of colonoscopy investigation for all participants who require further investigations.

You will join a team of 25 Screening Officers who are essential in delivering the Hub’s daily operation. Screening Officers work across the core areas of the Hub including: 

-    Being the first point of contact and supporting the public on our busy telephone helpline.
-    Processing of FIT kits in our laboratory, from kit receipt through to issuing the result.
-    Undertaking administrative duties to ensure we are providing a high quality service for our population.
-    Making suggestions and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

This role suits individuals of all backgrounds who have strong spoken and written communication skills, and able to follow documented processes and instructions.

The Hub has free onsite parking and is located on the Surrey Research Park in Guildford. The Hub building is light, spacious and close to the local amenities of the Royal Surrey Hospital.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the Bowel Cancer Screening Hub to act as, Screening Officer providing support and guidance for users of the service on a day to day basis.  To ensure less experienced and junior staff are supported day to day both within the laboratory and helpline.  The Screening Officer will work closely with the Team Leaders ensuring a smooth running service at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work in both the Hub Laboratory, Helpline, and Administrative areas. The proportion of time spent in each area will depend on the needs of the service. As the programme develops there will be opportunities for staff to develop their skills in specific areas.

Be competent in the use of Bowel Cancer Screening Software (BCSS), identify population cohorts for screening and arrange for the circulation of letters, leaflets and test kits, make a computerised record of test results, and extract from the system data required for quality monitoring and reporting.

Receive and respond to telephone calls from participants, relatives, members of the public and other professional’s organisations using prepared guidelines in an efficient, helpful, tactful and compassionate manner.

Undertake specimen reception and recording in accordance with an approved procedure.

As a competent member of the team, be on hand to guide, train and supervise the work of new and junior team members.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE level grade C or above or equivalent qualification or experience.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience working within an multidisciplinary office environment
  • Proven knowledge of computers to include the use of Microsoft Office and Windows – this will be tested at interview
  • Proven experience of working with the public
Desirable criteria
  • Proven experience working within the NHS Bowel Screening Programme including the use of the Bowel Cancer Screening System
  • Proven experience working within a laboratory setting
  • Proven experience working within an NHS environment
  • Proven experience of mentoring others
  • Proven experience with working with information/data
