Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical:

Contribute to the duty biochemist rota by;

• Facilitating timely reporting of analytical results.
• Supporting daily laboratory quality control procedures.
• Providing advice to clinicians on the appropriateness of laboratory tests.
• Providing clinical comments, where necessary, on laboratory reports.
• Authorise laboratory results.
• Provide interpretive advice and support to clinicians served by BSPS.
• Contribute to the management of the laboratory interpretive service.
• Organise and ensure adequately trained staff on the Clinical Authorisation rota for LCMS

Technical and Scientific

• Lead in conjunction with other staff the evaluation and implementation of assays and analysers.
• Develop and maintain personal expertise in the use of a wide variety of laboratory equipment to enable a broad spectrum of tests to be performed for evaluation projects.
• Prepare materials for testing equipment and kits using accurate and precise techniques (pipetting/ weighing/ volumetric measurement).
• Undertake such analytical procedures as are necessary for the evaluation of selected devices and equipment.
• Keep detailed records of all analytical work undertaken, for reasons of audit and good laboratory practice.
• Ensure the validity of any data using recognized quality procedures and follow troubleshooting procedures to resolve any problems encountered.
• Attend instrument training courses and scientific meetings as necessary for the effective performance of the work programme.
• Participate in scientific and technical training as required.

Communication

• Communicate using oral, written and electronic methods. This can require tact and diplomacy, persuading others to provide goods, services and information to time, and at minimal cost.
• Work effectively with NHS locally and throughout the UK and with other institutions, national bodies and manufacturers and suppliers of devices as necessary for the effectiveness of the work programme.
• Negotiate with companies to elicit cooperation with projects, including the loan of equipment and donation or purchase of consumables at lowest cost.
• Liaise with staff in laboratories recruited to support projects or to provide samples for analysis or information for reliability monitoring.
• Write detailed reports following standard operating procedures and using templates provided.
• Assist with the preparation and delivery of lectures and presentations, including scientific posters for conferences, meetings and university courses, as and when required.
• Travel to external sites to perform and/or monitor projects.
• Design and deliver training to staff within the department regarding use of analysers.

IT

• Prepare computer records of analytical data and perform appropriate statistical analysis on such data.
• Enter and extract data from databases.
• Prepare illustrated reports when required. Reports may include graphical representation of data. Use scanning and digital photography and associated software for editing and manipulation of images.
• Use appropriate tools to maintain and use a reference database.

Health and Safety

• Attend mandatory training.
• Maintain knowledge of current practice with regard to health and safety, COSHH and risk assessments, ensuring compliance within the Research laboratory
• Ensure all laboratory equipment is used and maintained to safety standards.
