Job overview

The Royal Surrey County Hospital Main Operating Theatres Department currently has opportunities for Registered Nurses to join our caring and dynamic scrub team.

Our ideal candidates will be highly motivated, pro-active team players. Excellent communication skills and a flexible approach are essential. Experience and professional development relevant to this post will be an advantage but is not essential as comprehensive Trust and local induction/training is available.

As leaders in Major Laparoscopic Surgery with the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit – an internationally recognised centre of excellence created for the teaching of innovative laparoscopic surgical techniques - just some of the many reasons to join our amazing team.

Specialties here include: Major open surgery, laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery in Colorectal, Urology, Gynae Oncology, Hepatobiliary, and Upper GI.Breast Surgery, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics, Major Head and Neck and ENT including oncology, Trauma & Orthopaedics and CEPOD.

We are the Regional referral centre for Upper GI work, including emergency Oesophagogastric cases. As well as this, the Trust offers a wide range of staff benefits including support through occupational health services, a staff gym, a cycle to work scheme and a social club.

Main duties of the job

·       To provide a high standard of individualised patient care reflecting individual competencies and education. 

·       To ensure that care is evidence based and patient centred. 

·       To assist senior staff in the management and organisation of the nursing service in the clinical area.

JOB SUMMARY

·      To work effectively as part of the Theatres/Recovery/Anaesthetic team.

·      To provide high quality, research based nursing care that is patient focused.

·  To take an active role in maintaining effective communication with all disciplines and patients.

·       To adhere to all theatre policies as detailed in the Theatre Policy manual.

·      To support the Theatre Operations Manager in the establishment of a good working atmosphere and in making the most effective/efficient use of staff supplies and services.

Our recent CQC inspection found us to be ‘providing services that were safe, effective, responsive caring and well-led. The Trust is based in Guildford the historic county town of Surrey and has a range of attractions and cosmopolitan town centre shopping. The town also has easy access to London and its main airports by road or train.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN
  • Degree/Diploma or evidence of equivalent experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Operating Theatre experience
  • Demonstrates professional awareness and knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of current issues in Acute NHS setting
  • Consolidation of Nurse Training
  • Can demonstrate up-to-date clinical credibility/competence
  • Knowledge of clinical governance issues, such as complaints handling, clinical risk management
