Job overview

A Band 6 Nurse in a Trauma and Orthopaedic ward provides advanced clinical care and leads the nursing team in managing patients with fractures, joint replacements, spinal injuries, and complex trauma. The role involves coordinating safe patient flow, supporting junior staff, and ensuring high standards of post‑operative and rehabilitative care. Band 6 nurses act as clinical role models, oversee shift management, and work closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, timely, and compassionate care. Strong leadership, excellent communication, and confident decision‑making are essential in this fast‑paced and highly specialised environment.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead the nursing team during shifts and ensure safe staffing

  • Provide advanced clinical care for trauma and orthopaedic patients

  • Manage post‑operative care, wounds, traction, and pain control

  • Coordinate patient flow, including admissions and discharges

  • Support, supervise, and mentor junior staff and students

  • Ensure high standards of documentation, safety, and infection control

  • Work closely with the MDT to deliver effective rehabilitation

  • Promote a positive patient experience and address concerns promptly
