Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine department at Wexham Park Hospital as  a Consultant.

This is a full time substantive 10 PA Consultant post which encompasses 8.25 DCC and 1.75 SPA but any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs. Additional sessions may be available on request.

The post will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant Contract (2003). In addition to appraisal, the job plans of all Consultants will be reviewed at least annually in conjunction with the Chief of Service and the Associate Director.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in developing services within the Trust and to share the clinical, administrative and teaching work with the other consultants in the department.

Participation in Clinical Audit is a requirement and an ongoing activity in the Department.

Main duties of the job

Proposed timetable/Job plan

The proposed Timetable is indicative of the work required and will be flexible depending on service needs and interests of the applicant. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and Clinical Lead on behalf of the DMD and CD.

The job plan will then be reviewed annually if necessary. It will cover all aspects including clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities.

Out of hours non-resident on call duties is an essential component of the job plan.

So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues, this includes short periods of annual leave, sick leave, study and professional leave on a quid pro quo basis.

On occasions, Consultants may be requested to perform additional duties in emergencies or unforeseen circumstances or convert SPA time to Direct Clinical Care. Leave should not be taken during the full week of ICU cover.

The Anaesthetics department offers an active teaching programme for the resident doctors which includes a fixed half day each fortnight for teaching within the department.

Research activity is encouraged and supported by the Trust. Attendance at the monthly educational day is mandatory.
