We have an exciting opportunity for a part-time Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) to join the team at Wexham Park Hospital, part of Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services — one of the largest NHS-led pathology networks in the UK.

This joint venture brings together the expertise of Frimley Health, Royal Surrey County Hospital, Ashford & St Peter’s, Royal Berkshire, and Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trusts.

In this role, you will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality, patient-focused diagnostic service.

Working within a collaborative and inclusive team, you will support essential laboratory processes, ensuring timely and accurate results for clinicians and patients.

This position is ideal for individuals seeking part-time work in a fast-paced healthcare environment, with opportunities to develop core laboratory skills and play a key part in supporting patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be based in Biochemistry section providing comprehensive support Blood Sciences department.
  • Duties include assisting in the preparation of analytical work for Biochemistry Department across a range of scientific disciplines under the supervision of a Registered Biomedical Scientist. 
  • Assist in the loading / unloading potentially infectious samples onto basic automated and manual equipment, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), under supervision as required.
  • Monitoring and maintaining stock levels of laboratory consumables, ensuring that supplies are ordered and restocked in a timely manner to support continuous operations.
  • Carrying out general laboratory duties such as preparing samples, disposing of waste correctly, maintaining cleanliness of work areas, and ensuring compliance with health and safety guidelines.
  • Supporting the team with administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, and handling basic telephone queries.
  • Ensures EQA samples and incomplete outstanding lists are managed effectively.

The post holder is expected to cover 24/7 shift in Blood Sciences and will consist of consecutive nights.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The post holder will work closely with the line manager to support the delivery of a high-quality technical service aligned with UKAS and ISO 15189:2022 standards.
  • They will assist in maintaining robust laboratory processes, ensuring accuracy, safety, and compliance across all activities.
  • The role involves developing and sustaining effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels, including scientific, technical, and medical staff, to facilitate smooth workflow and timely service delivery.
  • Responsibilities include contributing to daily laboratory operations, supporting quality assurance tasks, and assisting with documentation required for accreditation.
  • The post holder will help monitor equipment, report issues promptly, and uphold best practice in sample handling and data entry.
  • They will also participate in training, competency assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure the service meets evolving clinical and regulatory requirements.
