Consultant Haematologist Frimley Health NHS Trust (Wexham Park Hospital)

We are pleased to receive applications for a new substantive full time (10 PA) consultant haematologist (due to restructuring of working hours in existing consultant team)  based at Wexham Park Hospital, Berkshire.

You would join a consultant team of 6 who have day to day responsibility for haematology patients admitted to Eden ward, which has single room ensuite facilities, with a well-staffed chemotherapy day unit adjacent to the ward.

The inpatient cohort is BSH level 3. Out of hours on-site cover is provided by the medical team ’on-take’, with advice from the consultant haematologist on call.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

This is a Consultant Haematologist post to join a successful and well-respected team of 6 other Consultant Haematologists at Wexham Park Hospital, created due to a planned restructuring of departmental job plans. The job comprises 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), although less than full time working may be discussed.

The post will include management of general haematology, malignant haematology, immunohaematology and red cell haematology patients via outpatient clinics, inpatient admissions and the haematology day unit.

The on-call rotation will be to provide cover out of hours and weekends at a frequency of 1:6 with approximately 1/3 of these being ‘second on call’ to provide advice to the specialist registrars as required.  This cover is for clinical and laboratory on-call for the Wexham Park catchment area. On call consultants are expected to undertake a daily weekend ward round of haematology patients on Eden ward, unless these duties have been delegated to a registrar.

The basis of the post is 10 programmed activities, of which is to include 1.5 SPA. Proportionally more SPA time may be agreed if additional roles are undertaken.

The job plan will be reviewed initially with the Lead Haematologist's, followed as required by the Chiefs of Service for Medicine and Pathology.  All changes would be by mutual agreement. Appraisals and revalidation take place regularly.  Changes having budgetary or contractual implications would also need the agreement of the Chief Executive.

One half day per month is dedicated to Trust wide Audit and Teaching during which time all routine work is suspended.  All staff are expected to attend with the exception of those providing emergency cover.  A medical departmental meeting is also held at this time. All members of the department are encouraged to take study leave and will be expected to fulfill Royal College CPD requirements.

It is assumed that every member of the Department will play a full part in formal and informal teaching of medical and other staff and this is recognised as part of Supporting Professional Activities. There may be scope to increase the allocation if the successful candidate is to take on an Education Supervisor role of medical trainees or another recognised role.
