Job overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Locum Consultant to join the Infection team at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust part time for 12 months. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a restructured and forward-looking service, supporting the delivery of high-quality, integrated infection care across our three hospital sites.
You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of Consultant Microbiologists and Infectious Diseases Specialists and Consultant Clinical Scientists to provide a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective infection and microbiology service.
Applicants should have experience in Clinical Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases. You must hold (or be within 6 months of obtaining) a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Microbiology & Virology or Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology (or equivalent recognised qualifications).

Main duties of the job
The postholder will provide a high-quality, cross-site infection service at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, including clinical microbiology, infectious disease consultation, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention and control. Core duties include laboratory oversight, authorising results, ward consultations, ICU rounds, MDT participation (e.g., diabetic foot, orthopaedics, haematology, TB), and public health liaison.
The role involves active engagement in the Hospital Infection Management Service (HIMS), supporting outpatient antimicrobial therapy and complex infection care. Leadership opportunities include Infection Control Doctor, Antimicrobial Stewardship Lead, Clinical Infection Lead, or Laboratory Liaison Lead. The post also supports training, audit, and quality improvement, with participation in research, education, and ongoing service development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Deliver a cross-site infection service including clinical microbiology, infectious diseases consultation, and antimicrobial stewardship across Frimley Park, Wexham Park, and Heatherwood Hospitals.
- Oversee laboratory duties such as authorising results, liaising with staff, managing significant isolates, and supporting diagnostics optimisation.
- Provide direct clinical input through ward consultations, ICU rounds, and participation in specialist MDTs (e.g. diabetic foot, haematology, orthopaedics).
- Contribute to key infection services including the Hospital Infection Management Service (HIMS), infection prevention and control, and guideline development.
- Support education, research, and leadership, including teaching junior staff, participating in audits, and potentially leading roles in IPC, stewardship, or laboratory liaison.

Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Degree
- GMC registered
- FRCPath
Desirable criteria
- Higher Postgraduate Qualification eg PhD, MD, MSc, DTM&H
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Completed 10 years in Microbiology/Infectious Diseases
- Experience of ward based clinical microbiology liaison and consultation
- Experience in Infection control and antimicrobial stewardship
Leadership, Management and Clinical Governance
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit and quality improvement activities and understanding of clinical governance activities
- Demonstrate support of trust values delivering and supporting change putting patients at the heart of the service
Desirable criteria
- Experience of business planning
- Management experience and/or attended management training
- leadership experience and/or attended leadership training
