Job overview

This post is designed to support the development of advanced gynaecological and robotic surgical skills for a Specialist Grade in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a special interest in oncology diagnostics. 

The primary aim of the role is to equip the specialist grade doctor with the clinical, surgical, and managerial competencies required to transition confidently into a substantive consultant post. The post offers extensive exposure to benign gynaecologygynaecological oncology, and robotic surgery, through a structured programme that includes direct and indirectly supervised outpatient clinics and theatre lists alongside consultants. This experience is intended to significantly enhance the skill set and strengthen their CV for future consultant applications. 

 

 

Main duties of the job

The allocation of programmed activities will be based on 9.0 for direct clinical care and up to 1.0 for supporting professional activities. The final job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Director. The pattern of work may alter in the future to meet changing needs and annual review meetings will take place in line with the job contract, job planning and appraisal arrangements.  

The proposed timetable, each week, which has some degree of flexibility will include:

Colposcopy and Vulval Clinics 0.25 PA  

Robotic Theatre 1.5PA 

Hysteroscopy 0.5 PA  

Gynae Theatre list 0.625 PA  

Labour Ward 1.1PA

Gyne/ Fibroid MDT Clinic Flexi 0.25 PA

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to lead gynaecology clinics, antenatal clinics, theatre lists, elective Caesarean section lists and Labour ward, in line with service requirements and individual competence. Candidates with an interest in, or accreditation for, colposcopy, vulvoscopy, and hysteroscopy will be supported to further develop and consolidate these subspecialist skills. 

The on-call commitment includes a fixed weekday night shift 1 in 4 and a Monday night 1 in 12The post is offered on a full-time basis, comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) under the specialist grade contract. The job plan will be reviewed every 12 months, or earlier if required, to ensure that sessional commitments remain aligned with service needs and training objectives. 

The post holder will be based at Wexham Park Hospital and will work closely with other colleagues on site with the same special interest and with the Tertiary cancer center at Hammersmith Hospital.  

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (FHFT) has 2 acute hospital sites, Wexham Park Hospital (WPH) and Frimley Park Hospital (FPH), both with busy Maternity Units and Emergency Departments and a range of other services. In addition, a new “state of the art” pure elective unit (Heatherwood Hospital) was opened in 2022. FHFT serves a population of nearly 900,000 and is the only acute Trust is its ICS which is Frimley Health ICS  

The post holder will undertake their on-call and Obstetric commitments at Wexham Park Hospital. It is anticipated that the post holder will undertake their outpatient clinics and inpatient surgical operating sessions at both WPH and Heatherwood Hospitals. The Trust gained full GIRFT accreditation in 2023. 

Wexham Park Hospital (WPH) has a dedicated Gynaecology/Early Pregnancy SDEC area which is open 8am to 8pm seven days a week which the postholder will have opportunity to work in. The postholder will be expected to participate in cross-site guidelines and governance processes and teaching for both Obstetrics and Gynaecology. They will be expected to participate in both local and network Gynaecology Oncology MDTs and management of the Suspected Cancer Pathways. They will be supported by Cancer Nurse Specialists and admin/cancer performance team.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • On the GMC’s Specialist Register or within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC’s Specialist Register
  • • MRCOG or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Shall have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. (Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted
  • • ST7 competencies or equivalent experience ATSM/Core competencies in Advanced Labour Ward
  • • ATSM in in Benign Abdominal Surgery (Open and Laparoscopic)
  • • BSCCP Colposcopy accreditation
  • • Robotic Docking Trained
  • • Special interest-SITM-in obstetrics
Desirable criteria
  • Robotic Console training

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Delivery Suite skills in a high risk setting
  • • Ability to deal with emergency gynaecology theatre cases independently
  • • Ability to make and implement management plans in an elective gynaecological setting
  • • Competent at outpatient hysteroscopy
  • • Competent at Colposcopy +LLETZ
  • • Skills in ANC care setting
Desirable criteria
  • Developing skills towards Robotic Surgery

Clinical Governance

  • • Ability to maintain high quality clinical records.
