Job overview
This is a role for an Associate Physiologist within the Respiratory Investigations Unit (RIU) currently providing a range of diagnostic testing, invasive and non-invasive for both in-patients and outpatients at Wexham Park Hospital, King Edward VII Hospital, Heatherwood, Frimley Park Hospital and the soon to be opening Slough Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC).
The role will see the candidate largely positioned within the Slough CDC but some site rotation is expected.
The Slough CDC will be a brand-new purpose-built two floor health facility situated in the heart of Slough opening Sept 2025. The CDC will operate 7 days a week and will offer an extensive set of diagnostic services including imaging, cardio-respiratory, audiology, phlebotomy, and endoscopy to meet the healthcare needs of the local population of and its surrounding areas.
The Respiratory Physiology service will run from 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday and we are happy to accommodate flexible working patterns within this.
Candidates should be aware of specific CDC working conditions will include potentially 12-hour days and weekend working
Main duties of the job
Perform a full range of routine and specialist procedures when required, with supervision, which requires a proficient level of theoretical knowledge and developed skills.
Our patients will be of all ages and the procedures carried out will need to obtain high quality diagnostic information to provide accurate factual reports following analysis and interpretation of physiological data.
The range of routine investigations of respiratory functions will consist of:
- Dynamic Lung volumes
- Maximal flow volume curves
- FeNo measurement
- Response to bronchodilators
- Static Lung volumes by helium dilution or whole body plethysmography
- Transfer factor for carbon monoxide using single breath Technique.
- Assessment of oxygen level using Pulse oximetry
- Assessment of respiratory impact of neuromuscular Dysfunction/Muscle pressure recordings
- Sleep study and analysing.
- Earlobe capillary blood gas sampling for baseline blood gas analysis
The successful candidate will also assist with specialist investigations such as:
- Cardio-pulmonary exercise testing
- Methacholine Challenge Testing
- CPAP set-up

- Have or working towards registration with voluntary and statutory professional bodies, such as RCCP or HCPC.
- Maintain professional portfolio to evidence professional and practice updating and attendance at mandatory training both annual and 3 yearly, including anaphylaxis, blood gas analyser training.
- Participate in staff appraisal process and contribute to own personal development plan and objectives.
- Plans, provides and facilitates training and education of the multi-professional staff, leaners and other junior staff within own speciality.
- To act as an expert resource for Respiratory Physiology within the Trust.
- Participate in the specialist national, regional and local conferences as agreed with the Service Manager

- Level 2 HCS apprenticeship program or equilavent
Desirable criteria
- ARTP/ BTS Part 1 and 2
Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to liase with Patients and Colleagues on clinical and non clinical information
Desirable criteria
- Cross Site working - with access to own car and transport
Special Requirements
Essential criteria
- Good interpersonal skills both written and verbal communication, diplomacy and negotiation skills
- Willing and able to work weekends and unsocial hours.
