This is Paediatric Emergency Medicine post, being recruited as one of a locum posts (7 DCC 3 SPA)  joining a team of 18 wte consultants leading the Emergency Department at Morriston Hospital.  Our workforce plan has been developed to provide quality patient care delivered by a team supported to reach their full potential; enhance their skills with dedicated time to develop special interests and with innovative job planning and progression for both sustainable working and a quality work-life balance.

Main duties of the job

You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness. 

Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care; allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff.  In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work in line with the values, operational policies and integrated medium term plan (IMTP) of the Health Board. You are encouraged to consider how services can be improved and to report any concerns about safety.

The Emergency Department at Morriston Hospital is the major unit for South West Wales seeing approximately 85,000 new patients per year of which over 18,000 are under 18 years of age.   Due to surrounding minor injury units, there is an emphasis at Morriston on major trauma and serious medical presentations.   The unit benefits from the on-site support of all major specialties with ophthalmology, neonatology and obstetrics & gynaecology located on the Singleton hospital site in Swansea and cranial neurosurgery and paediatric intensive care provided at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people.   We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.  

 

Mental Health and learning Disabilities services are provided both in hospital settings (Cefn Coed Hospital, Swansea Caswell clinic and Taith Newydd at Glanrhyd Bridgend) and other community settings.  

We also have community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals.   

 

The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University. Aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of Southwest Wales.

You will be required to participate in the Health Board’s risk management process, clinical governance and any other healthcare governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Health Board.  Adherence to the Caldicott Principles of information governance is mandatory. 

You will be required to maintain a licence to practice through revalidation, to undergo satisfactory annual appraisal using the all Wales online Medical Appraisal Scheme (“MARS”) and to formulate a Personal Development Plan, in conjunction with the Clinical lead, to identify training and development needs.  You will be expected to participate in sufficient personal and professional development to fulfill Royal College and GMC requirements. You will also be required to undergo a job plan review at least annually and to agree and then meet service outcomes.

You will be expected to make a significant contribution to the service and directorate planning process through active participation in the clinical directorate structure.

You will participate in the 1 in 6 on call rota at Morriston Hospital, with prospective cover. In exceptional circumstances it may also be necessary to undertake duties at other locations with the Health Board. Travelling as necessary between hospitals/clinic will be required to undertake such duties. Travel expenses will be remunerated according to the Health Board policy and procedures for claiming.

The Emergency Department underwent significant changes during 2020 and now supports a Children’s Emergency Unit, a dedicated area that includes separate reception, waiting room, 1 triage room, 1 CAMHS assessment room, 1 resus and 1 HDU cubicles and 8 trolleys inclusive of four cubicles.  The adult department currently includes a 5 bedded resuscitation area, 3 spaces for ambulance handover and rapid assessment, 3 walk-in triage and initial assessment rooms, 15 trolley spaces (including 5 cubicles), 6 ambulatory spaces, a dedicated mental health room and a fit to sit area for observation and treatment.  There is a separate ENP run minor injury stream with an area that includes a waiting space and 4 clinical bays.  These rooms are also  used for our review clinics, by our physiotherapy practitioners and our dedicated occupational therapists.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with the GMC
  • Licensed to practice
  • On Specialist Register with GMC Emergency Medicine Specialist
  • Current ATLS/APLS/ALS certification
Desirable criteria
  • ATLS, ALS or APLS instructor status
  • Teaching qualification/Higher qualification in medical education

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of an ability to develop effective working relationships, on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff (”Working Together”)
  • Evidence of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve a service (“Always Improving”)
  • Values partnership with other agencies (”Working Together”)
  • Evidence of teaching and training of post/undergraduate clinical staff
