We are looking for a GP to work as part of a primary care and nurse led clinical team providing direct patient care to the HMP Swansea patient population.

Experience of substance misuse and experience or additional qualifications in mental health would be welcomed.

Main duties of the job

The role comprises 1 day a week consisting of 2 clinics in person at HMP Swansea plus 08--1830 on call and additional remote weekend cover.

The post holder is expected to provide direct patient care for routine and urgent presentations including substance misuse. To provide appropriate health promotion and preventative health care advice to all patients and to manage long term conditions as per national guidelines.

To initiate an MDT approach to patient care where appropriate to ensure a holistic and prudent approach to patient care.

Alongside clinical care the role includes supporting the clinical lead with appropriate clinical governance, management and quality improvement activities as well as supervision, teaching and training of allied health professionals.

There is the potential for the appropriately experienced candidate to take a lead on primary mental health assessment and prescribing, including ADHD.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice and entry on the GP Register
  • RCGP part 1 Substance misuse and Alcohol (or willing to undertake)
  • Included on a Welsh Medical Performers List
  • Experience of working as a General Practitioner
Desirable criteria
  • RCGP Part 2 Substance Misuse
  • Qualifications in the assessment and management of ADHD

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as a General Practitioner
  • Experience of and/or willingness to provide mentoring and support to alternative Clinicians
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in the prison setting
  • Experience of working with patients with a history of substance misuse
  • Experience of working with patients with Mental Health
  • A&E experience
  • Experience working with homeless
  • Additional experience within a mental health team for instance around assessment and or review of patients with ADHD

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Proven ability to handle a busy and varied primary care based caseload and respond flexibly to workload fluctuations
  • Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior colleagues as appropriate Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Ability to draft letters, reports and protocols in a timely manner
